Microsoft Office Live = Nightmare
-
Has anyone else here tried Microsoft Office Live? (http://officelive.microsoft.com/officelivebasic.aspx[^]) The premise sounds intriguing, but it has been one of the most frustrating experiences in my life. The entire site is half-baked. One of the most absurd things is that you can't use a plus sign in a web page without using a very convoluted solution with pasting javascript. On top of that, the number of things that simply don't work or work in a counter-intuitive way is astonishing. It's like people who have never created or managed a web site are designing it. I signed up for it because it was free and will be keeping it on the short term for that same reason, but unless they greatly improve the service, I'll bite the bullet and move to a genuinely professional service.

I haven't used it. Is it just a service to allow you create web pages?

A backwards, convoluted, non-standard implementation? From Microsoft? Surely you're joking... ;P
standards are for small people who don't have the balls to tell the world that their way is the right way.

JOE - I too have tried to use their service and I AGREE with you 110%, I created a quick and dirty website for two reasons: * To test out the SITE and see what it offers in comparison to Google Apps for Your Domain *AND to see if it really, truly, does give you the DOMAIN NAME for free and my results were YES it really does give you the DOMAIN for free. It does NOT cost you a dime to buy the domain. and in comparison to GOOGLE's services it comes close but I think googles approcah is much more user-friendly. I set up the site www.ideafordell.com mainly for myself and my friends, and for an idea I wanted to try and get to Mr. Dell himself. The servers NEVER took a hit even after they were bombarded by the DIGG effect after my site made the front page. joseguia

It's a web hosting service. They provide several templates and tools to "easily" create a web site. Each page is stored as asp pages so you are forced to work with their dorky tools. The nice thing is that you really do get free domain registration and the service is free. For that reason alone I'll stick with it for the short term (and to see if they actually fix it or just let it rot.)

Actually I feel the problem here is that we 'know' what we are doing so it is completely 'counter-intuitive'. I agree, it does suck from our perspective. Hell, I could whip off a complete site in Dreamweaver MX here in the time it takes to get one page update (28.8 kbps connects here in hicksville). Okay, I'm be a bit over the top there, but it's durn close. FP 2002 would take longer, but again not by much (gag, blech!). Still, for a free domain name, fifty 2 GB mailboxes, and a few whistles, it's okay. I sure wouldn't pay for it without more compelling/much improved software though. For a few bucks for registration, $29.50 per year for hosting (datapacket.net, my provider now which has all the bells and whistles and I've been with for over two years), and installation of something like CommunityServer 2.0, you can actually do much better than the premium rigs that MS is trying to sell. {Shrug} That does take a modicum of ability to utilize in comparison though. We are not the target audience here. SOHO/SB is the target. They ain't IT people, they don't have IT people. End of story. I've got phoenixlords.org a my reserved domain name. No idea what I'll do with the site but it's a cool name (it was my guild in Diablo 2/LoD) and I am doing more than a bit of non-profit work these days in consulting.

Curious, is that little banner ad in the bottom right corner you work or is the site actually not free as you have to advertise MS Office Live?

You are correct Rocky, that is a FORCED advertisement, you have no control over that. I still didnt pay for anything so technically it is free, I think they mention leaving it there 'cause its supposedly under BETA, but I cant recall for sure.
Yeah, that is typical of "free" things, they are free but require you to advertise for them. Same thing happened with Community Server, it was a totally free system, then a system requiring you to carry their logo/add on the bottom of every page (which went from a simple link to a large graphic ad for Telligent Systems, then went back to a "Community Server" icon/logo), followed then by a restriction to only allow the free version if you agree to carry their adveristing logo at the bottom and use it for non-commerical purposes. So, what started out free is now at least $299 per year (if you do not want any of their add-ons) for commerical purposes. I think one other thing that bugs me about Community Server is that they primary source which is a commerical for profit entity is run under a .org domain which is suppose to be for non-profits. SO, while they offer their services for advertising of their system, in the future they will probably limit what a company can do or embed more of their ads in more areas of a person's site. With the inexpensive costs of having a website these days, I do not under stand why busineses would want this service. I mean, you can have a website for only a couple dollars per month and a $6 annual domain name. Any businesses that would use the MS services would appear mighty cheap!
