Ok, I have had a Philips 201B4[^] (phlips.com seems to be down currently) as my main monitor for around 3 years now (not really that old IMO). Yeah, I'm still stuck in CRT land. :-D A few months ago it started getting extremely blurry. Normally I'd think I'm going blind except my second cheapo monitor is still clear (go figure). No matter what setting I choose the stupid thing is still blurry as ever. So, please tell me there's a monitor guru out there can give me a clue? Is it the aperture or something I can adjust (I vaguely even know what that is), or is there any hope? Or, is it time to make Mr. Monitor meet Mr. Trashcan? Because after months of staring at this blurry thing I think I'm ready to throw it against the wall. Any advice by the knowledgeable ones is greatly appreciated.

I think your monitor is toast. I have a Sony F500-something, and it went fuzzy basically over night. It manages to keep some shades sharp (black on gray for instance), but anything with an intensity over 0.3 (full scale being 1.0), it's almost unreadable. That is an indication of a CRT not being able to bend the electron beams properly...

Has anything else been going blurry? If so, check you blood sugar level. If not have a look to see if your monitor has a degauss button or setting...

Well my second cheap monitor looks clear, so I hope that's not the case.

It sounds like the focus voltage is off - just remember that area of the monitor can have 15-20kV!

There are one or more sets of focusing (magnetic) rings for the electron beam on the CRT. I doubt that they, themselves, are going snarky but more than likely the circuitry is going. It's not something you can, or even should, service yourself. Getting nailed by 5 kVDC (5000 Volts DC) is not something to chance. I'm one of the few (all eight of us in the US Navy) that have lived through getting nailed by 20 kVDC and the only one not to have a pace maker. Might explain my scrambled brains/nervous system. Leave it to a Pro or just get a new one. LCD flat panels are pretty durn cheap right now, have fast response times (high frame rates), and will run you about what fixing the durn CRT would cost. BTW, I'm still in CRT land, although I wouldn't call it stuck. They'll pry my Sony Multiscan G400 out of my cold dead fingers!

Thanks for the info. The main reason I want to swap over to LCD anyway is due to my eye strain. I don't have perfect eye muscles, and since they are easier on the eyes you get the idea. Thanks again.

Sounds like it's totally fried. I would look around to see if maybe there is a new source of interferance, but other than that, when they get blurry (as opposed to showing patterns, weird colors or something else) they're gone.
