I doubt that any software can be uncrackable.. so not surprised really.

Well it could, locked in an underground nuclear bunker to which air has no access, people & organisms have to access and there is no connection to the outside world. (Oh and to make sure it's even safer, it's never turned on).

Of course you can make a program hard to crack, e.g. by providing thousands of distributed checks instead of one central 'key'. Certainly MS knows that. BTW, strangely enough Linux seems to have absolutely no problem with 'piracy' ... ;P

Windows wouldn't have the market penetration it does without piracy.. It's a question of how much they can get people to pay, and how many will pay up.

You can monitor it on the crack groups on UseNet. I used to monitor all those groups, the 'hacking' groups (I'm a hacker, they're vandals!), and their various underground boards all the time. If you do security work it's nice to have a clue at what you'll be seeing shortly if not immediately. I'm surprised that the crack wasn't posted before it went Gold. That's happened on more than one occasion, actually that's the more usual case by a long mile and not just to MS.

And you can bet your best computer that they have internal econometric studies which estimate overall sales by pricepoint. If it were my firm, I sure would or even conduct the studies myself.

Who'd want to. I recently tried Linux and eventually put back Windows XP on the machine. Linux is getting there, and I will try it again sometime, but at present I don't think it is good enough to be a real contender.

But can you hear all the crying out there when a Windows Update in the future locks their computer down to nothing more than a web browser for one hour per day, after Microsoft blocks the patches and sends out the update to their machines. If they want their systems to stay up-to-date with the latest updates and patches, they probably will have to buy it. Sure hope we do not read in the news that some large corporation suddenly lost all their computers to a virus and find out later, it as an MS update ;)

The software giant has taken similar measures previously with Windows XP, preventing users that it had identified as using pirated versions from downloading certain updates such as Internet Explorer 7. There you go EU - that isn't so hard to do, is it?

Who'd want to. I recently tried Linux and eventually put back Windows XP on the machine. Linux is getting there, and I will try it again sometime, but at present I don't think it is good enough to be a real contender.

The very nature of Linux will prevent it from being completely usable. (And I hate having to say that.)

Just goes to show that on a fundamental level you can't both give someone access to something and keep it secret from them.
