Hey your map missed a country; I'd double check you didn't get it out of a cereal box called Retard Puffs. ;P

 Am I missing a very subtle and ironic joke about a map that deliberately leaves out the US to show what a dumb idea leaving out the US is?

That's the dumb bit? I saw a guy sunbathing in a latitude that probably isn't very suitable for it...

Yep, but it could have been during one of those record heat waves last summer in Europe :)

Well, I would suspect that beauty is in the eye of the beholder in this case, as in it can mean different things to different people if they don't know anything about the map (other than the seen). While I don't know the intent of the map with 100% certainty, asking us to try and find our home on a site that's mainly filled with people from the US on a map that has no US seems odd. And if there was something I didn't get either, then fine, I'll go buy me a box of Retard Puffs and see what kinda map I get. :-D

I assume that was the point. The newspaper article under the map (I didn't keep it) was about a publicity campaign that the World Exposition organisation started in the USA in 1999. They tried to convince the USA to participate in the EXPO 2000^. The intention of the map advertisement was to show that on a world exposition without America something is clearly missing. When I saw the picture for the first time I did not get it at all. I had to look at it for a few seconds to realize that a piece of continent is missing at all. ;) :rose:

To this I can agree, but I have to ask, why prey tell would you ask a site that has the majority of people from the US to find their hometown on a map that has no US? Political point? You forgot it had no US? Crazy joke that flew right over my head? What gives?

This picture was pinned to the wall in my apartment. I cut it out of a newspaper about seven years ago. Today I took off my hundreds of pictures and postcards, because I'll move to another house quite soon. When I found this one again, I thought every CPian should try and find his home town on the world map... http://www.binary-universe.net/etc/linkedImages/worldMap.jpg^ Have a great weekend :-D coco

Really depends on it's intent. The marketing angle you spoke of doesn't insult me at all. But, until I know the intent it's kinda like the boy who cried wolf, so I'm probably jumping the gun a bit. But, then again, stuff like that does happen, so it's not completely without warrant. Anyway, as I said, if I'm wrong on this, I'll be happy to chow down on the soggy yet tasty box of Retard Puffs.

Alaska stands for the few American guests at the EXPO. The big missing part stands for the majority who completely ignored the show. ;)

My thought was that it was something about an exhibition where they were considering leaving out the US, and then pointing out how dumb that was. My first guess when I saw the poster - and yes, I admit it was a very brief look! - was that it was a pro US poster. A "We should include the US" poster. Maybe I need to go play with the butterflies and pixies and other happy creatures who are also wearing rose coloured glasses ;)
