Company Name and logo?

Hi guys, I am thinking of starting a company. Well, initially it will be a one man company and I will be working on small projects but I hope to make it big in the coming years. I have lots of software ideas which I would like to create under a good name, so any ideas. (Ofcourse some of them will surely make it to CodeProject in the form of articles) ;) I will mostly be working with C++, ATL, MFC, C# and ASP.NET and the Windows platform for now. I want the name and logo to capture what I do in a light kind of way. I really like code-frog and his logo. :rolleyes: Something similar and orginal. So any ideas??? :)

Yeah, pick a temporary name and logo, make some money and look at it again in a couple of years when you can afford to hire professionals to do the logo, register the trademark and a good domain etc etc. Obsessing with the name and image of a company before you've even started making money is a very bad thing. Focus on business first, image second when you can afford to do it properly.

While I would agree generally, in IT you MUST look good since the beginning. There are too many competitors, and probably sadly the appearance is more important than substance. Most of the people tend to say "Oh, look at their website! It's SOOO ugly" and then look for someone else. IMHO. :)

I would disagree, appearance is important (that is why companies have pretty girls at the reception). So when you give out your business card to someone, he should think that this guy and his business is serious. You don't want a email id that ends with ...@yahoo.com or ...@msn.com etc, etc.

Business name, log, domain, etc. are important, but building the projects are a bigger priority. Once you are close to market (or at least betas), then worry about that stuff. It is amazing how you can sometimes pick up a name when you are not trying ;) An example, my first computer business was Software Unlimited. That was a nice name and fit my business. After all the letter head, business cards, etc, I found that many other companies thought it was a good name also, as they were using it in different locations around the USA. It can be hard to figure out a unique name that has a matching domain, but it is harder to build the brand for the name. About anything can be a good name as long as you build the brand for it.

I understood him to be starting is how ISV software company, not consulting. In that case I can tell you from experience it's the applications support and pricing that matter, the company name and log are easily distant 30th or even further down the list of things that are important.

Rocky has the right idea - the name will pop out of it's own accord sometimes and then you cna design the logo. Elaine :rose:
