MONO Vmware image updated
-
Wow those MONO people are on the ball! I suggested a few things when I tried out the MONO vmware image a few weeks ago and they just updated the image and implemented everything I suggested that would make it easier for Microsoft .net developers to try MONO.net on Linux. The new image is much more comprehensive and is updateable so no need to ever download it again. http://www.mono-project.com/news/archive/2006/Dec-21.html[^] Also I suggested to them that they should approach 3rd party component vendors and offer to help them port their components to MONO and I just noticed yesterday that one of the MONO people offered just that in a thread I started over at Telerik asking about MONO. (which a lot of people have jumped on requesting the same). And I had suggested that our report generator component vendor DevExpress look into MONO and this morning I got a notice that the "issue" I reported that one was accepted, no time frame though sadly but I'm sure it's not simple with all thos p/invokes in there. MONO is definitely picking up steam and the MONO guys seem pretty serious about making it easy for microsoft .net developers to get into MONO. I've been tracking the recent changes and they are really getting a handle on the p/invoke issues and a lot more of the .net 2 framework.

That's cos .NET is the only thing that's better on Windows than Linux currently . It's certainly the only major reason I continue to use Windows (and playing San Andreas but almost completed that :sigh:)

The Mono VMWARE image rocks! But now I am moving away from the image and doing a full blown Linux installation. I want to write a single, close to real life, application in different technologies (java/.net) and note my experiences with each of them on different platforms.
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it. -Brian Kernighan

Hi guys, Yes, I'm also willing to try out MONO! I did a little test a couple of years ago, but now seems MONO platform is really mature enough to achieve the risky goal of moving .NET to all operating systems. I hope MONO will be one of the most important platforms in the next years. Regards.

Mono is pretty slick. I'm constantly finding things in it that I wish were in the .NET framework itself. (Mono.GetOptions for instance) Plus, it's nice to be able to go in and look at the source code for controls and the like.
And I get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again

I tried with the previous image and I wasn't able to run an existing application, so I gave up. :sigh: I'll wait a couple of years more.

Ah but my San Andreas has (or used to and will again have) a McLaren F1, an SLR, Aston Martin Vanquish, DB9, Ferraris, Land Rovers etc. I.e. real cars ;P
I have no idea what I just said. But my intentions were sincere.

That's it.. thanks. I've been playing it on PS2, and didn't realize that the mods were avail on the PC. I'll have to get the PC version now. Once I get it I'll email ya if I have problems. Thanks for the offer.

Thats why in my opinion GTAIII, VC & SA are the best games available, especially SA because once you complete the game you can do so much more afterwards. Especially if you download Multi-Theft-Auto, but unfortunately my PCs only just powerful enough to run SA as it is anyway and I've got to save my money now for my trip to the States.

Your experience parallels mine except that it was much harder to do any of the things you mentioned in the last image. As far as development goes I would suspect anyone used to visual studio is going to use visual studio not monodevelop. My ultimate hope and the way things seem to be going with MONO is that I'll be able to just copy my assemblies to Linux and run them without doing any development on Linux at all. Hopefully I'm going to have some more time soon to get "stuck in" with MONO as well (yes I'm still working today, Christmas and holidays are a mere concept for the self employed who didn't time their release schedules very well! Cheers!
