You can't know that. Interstellar travel is dependent on a theoretical physics breakthrough to either cheat Einstein or to provide sufficient energy to reach relativistic speeds. The one given about theoretical breakthroughs is that they can't be predicted in advance. The key breakthrough is as likely to come next week as it is to not happen for another 500 years, or to never happen at all.

Cheating Einstein would be better, otherwise the rest of humanity won't have anything from it within their lifespan. (I mean the currently living humanity).

Yes, it's sad that it is this way, because I would really like to see how they reach new planets in a reasonable span of time. A new age would come for humanity if such a breakthrough would occur ! Marius

True. I'd be willing to volunteer for the first sleepership launched if that was the tech we reached first though. Project Orion designed a propulsion system capable of reaching several percent of the speed of light back in the 60's. The only catch being that while setting off a nuke a second in deep space isn't an issue, the fallout during takeoff and the EMP passing through the atmosphere would require an alternate method to reach high earth orbit.

of course, we could advance the human lifespan well over a thousand years instead... ;)
