IQ coefficient

My boy soon will go to kindergarten and I heard that kids get an IQ test before star elementary school, so I decided to research about what is this about. I found a very interesting link http://www.highiqsociety.org/iq_tests/[^] where you can take a free test without ask for the email address :) For first time I did an IQ test and I got a good score but I think a person with a background on mathematics and logic has a lot more chances over a person without it, I think a programmer will get a higher score than a very good lawyer. I’m sure I did wrong on history, how the heck am I supposed to know who was the prime minister of UK on the WWII when on that time my country was not even very populated with just 13M people, unless I had studied the WWII on my own is just can guess. I’m not sure how high accuracy those tests have. I have curiosity what could be the average score for programmers in CP.

You didn't study WWII in school? :omg: Winston Churchill is one of the biggest figures from that era.....and I'm not British.

That was in no way an IQ test. Im from sweden and dont know much about your history or politicians (I know about our own) does that mean I have a lower IQ than the average american then? pure IQ tests are completely free of that kind of things, It will only deal with logic/problem solving. try this instead: http://mensa.dk/testiq.html[^] (press "start testen" button , there are no danish text on the actual test) thats the danish Mensa online test. Scored 133 (with spread 15, 152 on spread 24) on that one :-)

I'd hazard a guess and say the school is simply trying to figure out where best to place your son. Yes, he may be kindergarten age, but he may be above/below kindergarten intelligence. If he's too much above, they may suggest he be placed in transitional 1st instead.

I just did the test and got a 62... does that make me really dumb?

IQ tests are a great way of testing people's ability to pass IQ tests. They are heavily weighted according to the preconcieved ideas of what intelligent people should know. having said that, no reputable IQ test will ask you questions about history. But, even if it doesn't, it means little.

In a class on psychometrics (a class about building tests), the instructor shared this story with us. They were evaluating an IQ test that targeted pre elementary children (essentially 4 year old). One of the questions showed a picture of a cowboy and an Indian. The cowboy was attempting to shoot the Indian, but his rifle was backward. The question was, "What is wrong with this picture?" The question was struck from the test because essentially no one got it right. The "right" answer was that the rifle was backward. The most popular answer was that they were fighting. It seems to me that the kids got it right :-) The real problem with a test for intelligence is that you have to define intelligence. It is exceptionally difficult to do that. I have two daughters. My oldest is hopeless at Math and logic. She never sees where the plot is going in a movie. She struggles in science. My younger daughter is great at Math and logic. She can grasp complex interactions quickly. Does that mean my older daughter is less intelligent than my younger daughter? My older daughter can play essentially any instrument she picks up. She started writing pretty good music (according to her teacher as well as me) when she was 10. She intuitively understands color and composition. She can express ideas and emotions in music, as dance and with printed media. To my mind she is a genius, but would likely not do well on an IQ test. Perhaps these traits are something besides intelligence. Like I said the issue is what do you define as intelligence?

<ooo> <ooo> <ooo>I thought that there was actually a method for developing cognitive tests that avoids testing for general knowledge (like history), but instead relies on things that intelligent people should be able to notice (like "which of these does not belong" type stuff) This sort of test was devised in order to compare (for example) aborigines (who could not even read English) to Americans.

Yes there is, but it still is based on the idea that "intelligent" people should be able to do X. One common example is that intelligent people are expected to be able to identify patterns. The issue here is how do you make the pattern? Color fields (a common approach), but people with color sight issues at a disadvantage. geometric designs seem to be more fair, but I am sure one could find a case where that too would put some group of people at a disadvantage. Even sorting out all those questions we are left with the question is identifying patterns a part of intelligence. I assume that you would agree that it is. OK, what else? Surely there is more to intelligence than recognizing patterns. The first problem is finding a group of skills that everyone, or even most people agree define intelligence. Then you have the standard test design issues.

I did the test, it said, well done, you have completed the test, I clicked ok or whatever, and it said, "Sorry, you must take a test in order to proceed. Thank you!" Not fair! So I don't know my score. It is definitely not an "intelligence" test in that intelligence is all you need to complete it. You also need obscure historical knowledge, for example. Most of it is a knowledge test. Maybe I should do it again and see if it will give me a score this time, or maybe I am bored now.

Yay, 127, but I got at least one wrong I realised after I went to the next question. I think I tended to rush too, rather than actually take the time available to me. Which is probably a sign of low intelligence, really.
