I'm so gangsta I eat cereal without the milkIn the thread here about the IPhone yesterday I pointed out that Apple was unlikely to ever be able to use the name since Cisco was already using it in business and had the trademark and someone indicated that Cisco and Apple had signed some agreement about this. I guess they hadn't or it fell through.

It's going to be interesting to see if they have to change the name. Possible names: Apple Phone (like Apple TV) Mac Phone Mac Phone X (like Mac OS X) Add your own Apple/Mac derived name to the list... :)

The company I used to work for (before we were bought by Dialogic, then Intel, then Eicon Networks) had developed a VoIP product that we called an iPOD (Internet Phone Over Data) http://web.archive.org/web/20010516030846/http://www.vtg.com/[^] I am not sure exactly why we did not continue to use the name... There was rumors that we lost the trademark to Apple and another that the owner sold it to them for tons of cash as part of the acquisition. I am not sure what happened.

There will probably be an out of court settlement where Cisco allow the use of the name of iPhone for an undisclosed shed load of money. :-)

Never deal with Apple or Steve Jobs. He entered into an agreement with Apple Records (the Beatles music company) to use the name "Apple" for his computer. Apple Records agreed on condition that Apple Computer never enter the music business. And exactly what business is iPod and iTunes in? Cisco should tell Jobs to stuff Apple's iPhone up where the sun doesn't shine.
