There was a chance I would have been, but now my next US trip will be late Feb/early March.

That's a shame.  Yeah, I'll hit Seattle, Portland, and Dallas for sure, and I'm hoping for New York on this next trip.  Orlando is a real possibility as well, and LA and San Fran are a given.  If we could hook up, that would rock.

If you were going to write a site with 3 million + members, would you dynamically calculate their status every time they posted, or would you store it in a table, which got updated, say, once a week ?

No sir, I would do it the sensible way and have it calculate every time the profile was viewed. example (written in good OLDE English (which is compatible with any other language as long as you speak it slowly)) message_count = SELECT count(*) FROM MessageTable WHERE userid=XXXXXX AND deleted=0; //OK not so plain english here /* Plain English starts here */ Call system settings Get (in an array) the different levels for posting. level = 0 for each entry in the array, if the message_count is equal to or greater then entry then level = the level number (note this will only work if the levels are tested from least to most) and then evaluate the user's level based on a few different other calcs. Anyway that is how I would do it.

I do development work for Code Project ( in Toronto ), and a company in Portland.  I also have a friend in Texas, who I always visit, and the work I do with him will possibly take me to Orlando.  I fly in out of LA and out of San Fran ( I have a business meeting there, too, for the Texas guy ).
