Yeah, Nintendo rocks, they always have. I will be buying one when I can get one cheap. I always wait, I hate spending a fortune on games.

Yeah, I'll be waiting for some better deals (including two controllers so Fiona can play along) before getting a Wii. It's not like the graphics can go out of date like on an Xbox or Playstation.

Actually the controllers are what I generally hate about consoles. They suck compared to a keyboard an mouse for anything except the most basic of games. Nintendo though have made some innovative, kickass controllers in the Wii.

Yeah, I was referring to lounging on the couch whilst blasting Locusts. Not as easy with a keyboard and mouse. But I agree regarding the Wii controller. Truly innovative.

Wii created a new game paradigm. I know some hard-core gamers and some non-gamers who just have so much fun with the Wii and playing fun games like tennis or bowling. for most people, that's enough for not going to a ps3 or an xbox360 which are only the same consoles but only better in graphics and sounds.

Dunno about that. There's more than just added graphics. Added processor means more AI, and having a 12 gig hard drive means I'll never have to move saved games between memory cards again. Its all about adding MORE. Especially when we're talking about open worlds for cruising through. Open terrain alone is worth the extra power.

we're talking about "immersion". since people can clearly become immersed in things that have no graphics at all, graphics aren't all that.

sure. not everybody requires lots of blinking lights. try not assuming everybody else shares your limitations.

graphics matter to people who think they matter, but in the end gameplay is far more important. a good game doesn't need the best graphics.

Yeah, but I don't play a game to read for immersion. Visuals help with that. And its not just blinking lights, but the realism they are hitting now is pretty WOW on an HDTV. And a good game with good graphics beats the pants off of one without. It doesn't have to be a trade off. With the next gen consoles you get added processing power and memory which adds to AI as well as graphics. That allows better gameplay if used.

Have to agree with Todd - you're on craic*. I've played around on the Wii a bit and I love the damned thing (will be getting one as soon as they are back in stock at Target) but to say it beats the pants off Xbox 360 games - you MUST be on craic* ;P Was up until 3am this morning playing online Star Trek Legacy and chatting with people while playing and coordinating the defense of space stations. Before that spent about 2 hours playing Viva Piñata (ehhh, it's a really macho game guys - honestly) - one of the most addictive games I've ever played. Games like PGR 3, GoW, The Lord of the Rings BFME II, are just so damn cool when playing alone but when you start going online - simply amazing. Nothing like being in Redmond and racing my brother back in Waterford with the abuse flying left right and centre as he side swipes me on the last bend of a 20 min race in PGR or playing GoW in cooperative mode with a work mate over Xbox Live. You can't get that on a PC (the experience is just not the same - it's just not as integrated) and you can't get it on the Wii. I wasn't a console fan until I got the 360 before Christmas - I was always in the "I can do it on the PC too and it's just as good" boat, but since I've had the 360 I'm a big console fan and I KNOW that it's just not the same on a PC. I have my nice and powerful PC, I have my 360, and I'll be getting my Wii. 360 will be king of those three though - primarily because of Xbox Live. Oh, and I have a nice 32" HDTV which makes the 360 look AMAZING. Seriously though - I personally prefer the online aspect of the 360 over the Wii. Just a personal preference and I completely understand why others are different. *btw, I know you're not on craic :-) Just too much Guinness.

What's your opinion on that game? I'm finding it a bit slow and cumbersome. I mean, fly, target, shoot, wait for turn, wait for turn, hyperspeed, target, shoot, wait for turn... Dunno, maybe I'm missing something.

I know plenty of people who do. They play MMO versions of them called MUDs over telnet. They prefer it over graphical MMOs like Everquest or WoW. Graphics are definitely useful. But I enjoy playing GoW or R6:Vegas on my 360 as much as I enjoy playing Rez[^] on my friend's PS2. "Great" graphics aren't necessary for a game to be enjoyable, otherwise nobody would play board games anymore either.

Well we can't all be cutting edge I guess. :) Actually I was thinking of finding out what cool hacks can be done with it since I'm probably not going to use it for anything else anymore.

If you own a nice big hdtv, or projector and a good sound system the xbox 360 kicks ass.
Yeah, that's pretty much what i've been hearing all around. This is probably why i don't play video games anymore... whatever happened to wiring up the old TV (with messed-up color) in the backroom and blowing things up while gorging on chips & soda?
We have an xbox 360 that we won, but we haven't really used it at all. a console is not the ideal platform for the games I like to play, even if they were available - civilization, black and white, civilization, Myst series, civilization, railroad tycoon. Oops, I think I repeated myself there. And my partner played uesd it to play halo 2, which he had been totally wanting to play for a looong time, but he eventually got fed-up with the controller, which he sucks and using and has next to no experience with, having played games on the PC all his life. Which is a shame, cos now we have an xbox 360 no one wants to use!! Maybe we sell it? ps. xbox360 games are SO expensive too! about 20% more expensive full price than a full price computer game!? That makes no kinda sense. ;)

I felt like that for a while. It took me a while to get used to the control system - since then it's been good fun. I played through on Captain difficulty to the TNG era before I went online to play - I've had some great matches since then - especialy using the defiant (cloak is so cool) and hiding in nebulas to surprise people.

Don't wait - switch ship quickly and attack from a different angle. Or put power to engines and drop speed to 1/4 so you can turn faster. It did take me a while to actually start enjoying this game and I'm guessing it's not for everybody. Plus there are a good few bugs around the entire online experience. What's your gamertag?

The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are all about how many polygons, pixels, shaders etc. they can render per second. The hype is mainly around their graphical capabilities. So any advances elsewhere in the industry in graphics will date them. With the Wii the main hype is around how much fun it is. That is much harder to date with advances. The Wii has nice graphics but they are not a patch on the other system. So it isn't the reason you buy it and so it isn't as important if the industry advances in graphics.

Well, that's one view of it I guess. I think that the really good games incorporate both good graphics with good gameplay. But I see your point. I bet also that after this initial innovation of the controller Nintendo will be back on board with the graphics push.
