Yeah, I only use 7-zip for my stuff. When dealing with the rest of the world I used plain old "nothing fancy" zip and it's fine.

For personal stuff I almost never compress any more. Disk space is dirt cheap, and noncompressed backups allow for much easier data recovery if anything does go wrong with the media. One of my friends backed all his data into a single multiCD zip and after a HD crash discovered that a dead CD in the middle rendered all of it useless.

I've been using WinAce 2.6, but have recently decided to drop it because the GUI is a little bland and I'm tired of it, plus their new marketing scheme involves adware. The biggest thing I liked about it that I can right-click on a file, drag it to a folder and the context menu allows you to extract to the folder or create a new folder using the filename as the name of the folder. What do you use for compressing files?

        Source 253.969Kb PST file (Outlook DB) 7-Zip | .7z | Normal Compression | 4MB dictionary | 138 sec | 174.178Kb | 58MB RAM used WinRAR | .rar | Normal Compression | 4MB dictionary | 170 sec | 175.257Kb | 37MB RAM used 7-Zip | .7z | Ultra Compression | 4MB dictionary | 144 sec | 174.084Kb | 60MB RAM used WinRAR | .rar | Best Compression | 4MB dictionary | 172 sec | 175.046Kb | 38MB RAM used 7-Zip | .7z | Ultra Compression | 64MB dictionary | 262 sec | 165.791Kb | 680MB RAM used Looks like 7-Zip has better compression size and time after all, good to know.

Seconded. I specially like the "Extract to separate folders" command. Now if there were only a "Extract to a folder if the contents aren't themselves in a folder" option...

7-zip is a good choice. it's free, open source and has recovery record too. its interface is not good as winrar, but... try to compress some text and bin files you'll see. good luck.

Here's another vote for 7-zip. Free, no ads, open source, and better compresion, what more do you need. Although I still use .zip for sending stuff out to the rest of the world.

After I found 7-zip I haven't looked back. It's just totally perfect for my needs and WinRAR always bugged me. Even after I bought a license to it. It bugs me.

To be honest, I much prefer the WinRAR user interface to the 7-Zip File Manager (or whatever they call it). If WinRAR let me make 7z files, I'd be in heaven.

Does WinRar let you generate self-extracting archive that can run a program (or a script) after decompression ? 7-zip can - quite useful for installers and patches. 7-zip can do all de/compressing context menu, no need to leave Explorer. And does WinRar come with an SDK that you can integrate into your own applications ? :)

7-zip I don't have a link but google it and you'll get a direct hit. It's GPL so I think it's 7-zip.org but I could be wrong. Har! Here it is: http://www.7-zip.org/[^]

7-Zip is the best - both in Windows and Linux, I use only 7-zip. Almost all formats are supported including RPM, ISO etc etc. But I wanna know if there is any free zip-utility which can be used to make a sfx archive with a custom icon for the exe [AFAIK, only registered version of Winzip do this!]. Will this be possible in 7zip? Siva
