So ive installed visual studio 2005 proferssional - and i run the check for updates function from within it. Our work PC have this SOE thing which means we cant run auto update ourselves fromthe start menu. I have Firefox set as my default browser. But IE is still installed. I have instances of both apps (IE and firefox) currently running . Forefox opens up and theres this page which says Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site. To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later. Well i am running I.E. 6 thanks mate, why dont you a) make sure your update pages are compliant with other browsers b) actually detect whether IE is there and start that up instead. its not rocket bloody science you know Bryce

the error message is misleading...what it really intended to say is that you need to use IE to display the update page...not Firefox...and since you have Firefox set as the default browser it won't happen by itself. You should be able to copy the URL from Firefox and paste to IE and proceed with the updates. Steve

Install IETab[^], and set *.microsoft.com to use IE automatically, then you needn't worry again.

            Good idea, but:

            Known Issues:

            1. IE's ActiveX enable/disable settings do NOT work

This probably means that MS Update procedures wont work. :~ :(

If as a developer you know the html in question will only work with IE you don't use default browser, you explicitly load your page into IE. It's not that difficult.
