Google or Windows Desktop Search?

Neither. Because I know where I put it, and I don't want to tell Microsoft or Google, it just doesn't seem right to me.

Well, exists another reasons to use indexed search. By example, when you are not the only user of the computer ;)

OK, that doesn't happen to me, either.

I just installed GDS again today. I'd been using WDS for the past couple of months. There are parts of WDS i liked: the interface meshed well with Explorer, providing context menus and such. But it just doesn't search as well. I found myself using it far, far less than i'd ever used GDS. Things i'd have gone to GDS for without thinking twice - where is the text file i made notes on for today's meeting, which source file did i put that useful little routine in - i usually tried to find some other way before going to WDS. The final straw came a few days ago, when i noticed response time being very, very slow when switching to an app that i'd had open for a day or so, checked the task manager, and saw that the WDS indexer was chewing up over a gig of virtual memory. So i'm back to using GDS. It's fast (almost instant results), it isn't chewing up memory, and i'm happy and productive again.

True. The normal Indexing service too slows down the PC and unless it is configured to exclude ASP.NET folders, very often I get the 'Access is denied' errors with the line pointing to machine.config. :)

I'm using Google Dektop Search, but some factors have done me think about Windows Desktop Search (Like Microsoft World Domination Plans Vista Built-in Desktop Search, and Google Desktop let my computer really slow sometimes... Then, what your use and why?

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.(John 3:16) :badger:Windows Desktop Search. Of the searches out there I'm not impressed with any of them really. I've tried all of them. I love Windows Desktop compared to any of the others and I truly have tried them all. With WDS I manage of 400 gigs of data and can search all of it in less than 20 seconds.

I use the Windows Desktop Search. I wouldn't use Google desktop search. I really don't have a great need for searching other than through e-mail and notes in OneNote. And as it turns out Outlook 2007 and OneNote need WDS, so that kind of removes the decision from me.
> And as it turns out Outlook 2007 and OneNote need WDS That's what I thought, but it's not true, at least for Outlook 2007. Google desktop search installs a toolbar inside Outlook 2007 (if you ask it to), so i've been able to remove Windows desktop search, which I disliked because you have to jump through hoops when you search on an area not indexed, as windows explorer defaults to the desktop search...it should be smart enough to know that area is not indexed and thus pull up the old search window.

I had GDS, and even without using it, found that it had used 250M of bandwidth (receive) unbeknownst to me. This only came out after we hi our cap and the report showed me as the highest user that week. Another guy at our office had the same problem. I now use Copernic Desktop Search, and it seems neat, well behaved and fast. Try it.

What put me off WDS is that when viewing a search hit in the preview pane, I couldn't find the search term. I had to copy and past from the preview pane into Notepad and do a Find. That is ridiculous.

I also use Copernic, it takes a while to build the initial index if you have over 300gb of stored data (like me). You can tweak the settings and have it index the files and folders and drives as you choose. You also have the ability to have it index the file names only or the content of entire file. It's nice to get results from email search that includes all of my off-line folders and their attachments.

I think there is an add-in you can get for that.

Copernic for me as well. The waiting for computer resources works very well. Searches are fast. The two issues I have are: 1) There is a program that I use that Copernic will slow down or lock up when I save the project. Copernic is jumping in too fast. 2) If you label an extension as a picture (.dwg - AutoCad drawing) and Copernic can't display it in the preview page, then the Copernic will shutdown it's desktop window. I tried GDS. It would re-index quite often and I didn't have any schedules for it to do that. Plus, like someone else mentioned, it downloaded quite a bit of information. Although, I did like all of the plug-ins available.

Having to get an add-in for such a basic feature does nothing to up my confidence in the WDS design team. You are looking for something, and you have to look for an add-in to find it? No thanks.

Hmmm, that's funny. I just thought you wanted keyword highlighting. Oh well, I'm not going to sell you on something you don't like. It works just fine for me.

My point is I already have keyword highlighting in Copernic without having to get an add-in.

I do.:) I did have resource problems with CDS 1.5 when that was out, so I abandoned it and tried it again when 1.7 came out about a year later. Not had any problems since then, although it often takes a while to end on shutdown and you get the occasional crash. Doesn't affect anything else though. Version 2 does seem slightly slower than version 1.7 though.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.(John 3:16) :badger:PC Pro and Micro Hebdo ranks Copernic Desktop Search Superior to Google, Yahoo and Microsoft[^] PC Pro selected Copernic Desktop Search as their desktop client of choice after evaluating five desktop search software applications including: Yahoo Desktop Search, Google Desktop Search and Windows Desktop Search by Microsoft. PC Pro found Copernic Desktop Search fast, sleek, powerful, and efficient. Copernic also received the lowest system resource usage on their test system from initial indexing and CPU usage through to disk space. As for Micro Hebdo, they also evaluated the same desktop search tools and selected Copernic Desktop Search as their #1 application. Micro Hebdo preferred Copernic Desktop Search for its efficiency, speed and well designed interface.
