Click here.[^] Stan, what do you think of this? Do you think the republicans, or an individual high in that group, asked the Australian PM to use that argument?

Considering that Howard is as fully committed to the current program as Bush, but lacks the manpower to even attempt an implementation on his own, it seems perfectly natural that it would be his own opinion.

I don't know what Stan thinks, but I doubt that any republicans would be so stupid as to ask anyone from another country to comment on a US election (particularly after the fun had by John Kerry over this). Regardless of the commenter's point of view, such a comment would be taken poorly by most of the US electorate. In Obama's case, it helps him rather than hurts, since Howard's comments are taken as unwelcome interference.

Obama responds well: "Mr. Obama brushed off the political attack, saying he finds it "flattering" to be criticized by such a prominent Bush supporter. "If he's ginned up to fight the good fight in Iraq, I would suggest that he call up another 20,000 Australians and send them to Iraq," he said during a campaign stop in Ames, Iowa. "Otherwise, it's just a bunch of empty rhetoric."

Surely there is some protocol (written or not) that forbids a foreign politician commenting on the internal political posturing during electioneering campaigns. As such, IMO, the Australian Prime Minister should be told to keep his nose out of USA internal politics.

The Australian Prime Minister should look after his own campaign as I recall, the Australians go to the polls later this year.

No, just the law of unintended consequences, ie it's more likely to backfire than help. The only exception being where Country B is is a puppet of Country A, in which bad things can happen if A's choice is ignored.

Maybe that is what he is doing. His real aim may be for domestic Australian consumption.

Regardless of what opinion you may have on why we are where we are, the fact of the matter is that we've pulled a scab off of Iraq and it is the height of irresponsibility to believe we should walk away.
