I noticed that my webcam will turn on for a second every once in a while. I believe it may be Windows Live Messenger 8.1 that is doing it however its hard to catch because the webcam light only turns for a second so its hard to tell what program is doing it. My computer is clean of maleware so I'm pretty sure its a legitimate program that is taking pictures. I have to disable the webcam in the device manager when I'm not using it. It really burns me to know that there is something taking pictures of me on my computer and it must be stopped. Has anyone else noticed this with Windows Live Messenger or any other program?

Surely you jest! Let me see if I understand this, there is a program taking pictures of you when you didn't ask it to take pictures and doing who knows what with them. :~ You call that legitimate?

Sounds like the first lucent thought you expressed in this post.

"Windows" anything should be viewed with suspicion. :~ Try disabling Windows Live Messenger or uninstalling it and see if you are still experiencing this behavior. You could put a cover over your web cam or point it at the ceiling or out the window when not in use. :suss: Remember if you have a cam with a microphone built in disabling the cam when not in use may be the best option.

I meant it is considered legit by most people because it from Microsoft. :~ I noticed my webcam betraying me after I installed Windows Live Messenger 8.1. When ever I start it my second monitor flashes black and my webcam turns on for a second. I thought it was just initializing my webcam at first but then I realized it did it often while I was chatting or reading email.

I am not polarizing Windows = bad, anything else = good. I realize that some other products are evil also. I think a good amount of caution should be exercised with any product, but especially with Windows because of their track record. I distrust Windows anything because the Windows marketing folks like to put a spin on any criticism instead of admitting there may be a problem. They say things like "you don't need to monitor outgoing packets" when they released the first Windows firewall for WinXP SP2 even though it was widely accepted that outgoing packets needed to be monitored and there were professional products available at the time that did just that. :~ That is just one example that I remember off hand because it was such a blatant lie but there have been other spin doctors on the payroll that say equally outlandish things and the heard just responds baah.

It is the built in webcam that is part of my Acer Aspire 5100 laptop. It never used to blink at me, but I noticed turning on for a split second after I install Windows Live Messenger 8.1 so I think WLM is the culprit.

Wouldn't it be far easier to just hack the repository? Then you get everything. :~

I'd love to help, but unfortunatley I have prior commitments monitoring the length of my grass. :Andrew Bleakley:
