I don't trust my computer.

I noticed that my webcam will turn on for a second every once in a while. I believe it may be Windows Live Messenger 8.1 that is doing it however its hard to catch because the webcam light only turns for a second so its hard to tell what program is doing it. My computer is clean of maleware so I'm pretty sure its a legitimate program that is taking pictures. I have to disable the webcam in the device manager when I'm not using it. It really burns me to know that there is something taking pictures of me on my computer and it must be stopped. Has anyone else noticed this with Windows Live Messenger or any other program?

What make of camera is it? I had an old Logitech webcam that used to crash itself and reinitialise every few hours. That may be what you are seeing?

I am not polarizing Windows = bad, anything else = good. I realize that some other products are evil also. I think a good amount of caution should be exercised with any product, but especially with Windows because of their track record. I distrust Windows anything because the Windows marketing folks like to put a spin on any criticism instead of admitting there may be a problem. They say things like "you don't need to monitor outgoing packets" when they released the first Windows firewall for WinXP SP2 even though it was widely accepted that outgoing packets needed to be monitored and there were professional products available at the time that did just that. :~ That is just one example that I remember off hand because it was such a blatant lie but there have been other spin doctors on the payroll that say equally outlandish things and the heard just responds baah. :rolleyes:

JimmyRopesI know you are not polarizing Windows = bad, I just mention Antritust[^] movie because it is about "one company" spying developers from different companies or freelance to steal the source code, they do it with cameras, they are fiber optic cams but the thread talk about web cam which is close enough. :)

It is the built in webcam that is part of my Acer Aspire 5100 laptop. It never used to blink at me, but I noticed turning on for a split second after I install Windows Live Messenger 8.1 so I think WLM is the culprit.
