Video card suggestions... [modified]

I need some suggestions for a quad display video card. Here's the desired specs (in order of importance): output: 4xDVI RAM: 512MB+ Bus: PCI x16 this[^] is the only thing i found thus far, but it falls short in terms of memory and bus speed... Any links/info/suggestions are much appreciated! [edit] side note: I only have 1 PCI-x16 slot and would prefer a single-card solution. [/edit] -- modified at 12:29 Tuesday 27th February, 2007

startOf course, you could always buy 2 Nvidia cards with their SLI technology...or 2 ATI cards with whatever tech they have.... Unless of course you only have one slot, then dunno. Hmm, on second thought, if theres USB sound cads, im sure theres USB Video cards  Anyone?

Then there comes a USB Processor.

One fine day, it is going to be just the USB port that lives with the cabinet. Everything else will be on USB. USB Processor, USB Motha board (:-D), USB CPU Cooling fan, USB .........

Yes and the other advantage is that they can survive a beer spill on them.;)

Matrox has had quad cards for a few years but the problem is that I do not think any of them are PCIe. Also matrox is very far behind nVidia and ATI in performance as they are mostly using chips from 3 years ago in their cards.

I have seen a few but they are slow and limited to low resolutions as a 40MB/s link just does not cut it for graphics. Compare that to the 4GB/s link of PCIe.

That is a PCIX card and I bet you do not have that in your mobo. It will run in a normal 32 bit PCI 133 MB/s slot but it will do so very slowly...

startbesides using 2 dualhead PCIe cards, the other option would be to use one of matroxes 2 or 3 port breakout boxes, which combine multiple monitors into a single extra wide virtual display. The only catch is that they're currently unable to support individual displays above 1280x1024. For a slightly lower net bandwidth I'd be much more interested in a 2x1600x1200 or 2x1680x1050 display.

startMatrox has a good one, but it costs a bomb. I see you have only one slot, I guess everyone else said what I was going to say. I have four displays, from two slots, it was a TON cheaper.

That wouldn't be that bad of an idea. With the average processor utilization being idle on most machines for business applications having a pool of processors would actually cause builds to be lightening fast. Imagine, I could finally render my CGI opus.

"a" card you are limited to nVidia, Matrox, or an even more expensive Medical imaging board. Cheaper alternatives: Get an SLIx16 board (or crossfire) and do not put it in SLI/crossfire mode, the cards run independantly at PCIx16 (your BUS will moan a bit, but ignore it). This is my preferred solution. another way is to get a triple/dual head-to-go type converter which makes one monitor signal into two: converter box on each of dual outs, dual monitor on each converter box, quad ready at lower resolutions (1280x1024 max, each monitor, usually). Works but all the "work" is being done on one card... I suggest the dual card. http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/cadgis/products/th2go/th2go.php[^]

Isn't there something called incredibuild that already does this?

I have a random list of responses to lounge posts. It is merely a function of how poor my random number generator is that makes my answers seemingly correct.
