Orcas CTP in VPC 2007?

How do I launch the Orcas CTP in Virtual PC 2007? I'm new to virtualization and to Virtual PC 2007. I've installed VPC 2007, which seems to be working fine. I've downloaded the Orcas January CTP image, along with its base file, and extracted both to vmc/vhd file pairs. In VPC 2007, I added a virtual machine for the CTP (VSDec2006CTP.vmc). When the virtual machine launches, Windows Server 2003 comes up fine, but I don't see Visual Studio anywhere. No Start menu entry, no desktop shortcut. I don't even see it in the Program Files folder. I can't figure out how to launch Orcas, or if it's even there. Am I looking in the wrong place, or did I miss a step setting up the VM? Thanks.

Are you sure you used the Orcas image for the VM, not the base image?

Okay--I found my answer. I was setting up the VM incorrectly. Here's the right way to do it: (1) In the VPC 2007 Console window, click the New... button to open the New Virtual Machine Wizard. (2) On the second page of the wizard, click the Add Existing Virtual Machine button. On the next page, specify VSDec2006CTP.vmc as the VM to load. (3) Finish the wizard, leaving the Show Setting checkbox checked. (4) In the Settings dialog, set the Hard Disk 1 property to VSDec2006CTP.vhd. (5) At this point, VPC 2007 will try to locate the 'parent' drive for the VM, which in this case is Base01.vhd. If it can't find it, it will prompt you to locate it. Once you locate and enter it, close the Settings dialog. (6) Open the VM from the VPC 2007 Console window. Login using the credentials provided in the Orcas Jan 07 CTP [download page](http://download page)[[^](http://download page)]. The VM will boot up, and you will find Orcas in the Start menu. BTW, the credentials on the download page worked fine for me. Specficially, the password given ('P2ssw0rd', rather than Microsoft's more usual 'P@ssw0rd') worked fine.

Are you sure you used the Orcas image for the VM, not the base image?

Good tip--thanks, Ed. It tells me I'm missing something, because Windows couldn't find devenv, and there is no VS folder in the Program Files folder.

Good to know, i want to try out the Orcas CTP myself RSN and i've repeatedly heard of login problems. In some cases, different keyboard layouts and language settings could be a reason, why the provided password would not work.

Where did you find base01.vhd? I downloaded all 8 parts of the virtual pc image, but it is looking for base01.vhd.
Go to the Instructions section, Paragraph 2, of the download page[^]. Click the VSCTPBase.exe link to download the base image. Yes, you are correct--there is no download button for the file. Go figure. Hope that helps!
