Mechanics here use disposable gloves for that reason, barrier creams can only do so much. Elaine :rose:

I don't need a barrier. In almost every work condition I can find I use gloves but I was having to handle 1" wood screws and with gloves you just cannot get those to be cooperative. I could have opted for surgical gloves (Lord knows, we have them.) but they are so hot and I sweat so easily that the sweat becomes as big a problem from the acidic salt content. I'm looking for a good recovery agent.:-D

You should check this out. It might not be wondrous, but I'd be amazed if it would be anything like anything else you know. I discovered it in a climbing shop, and it's made especially for climbers. It smells good, it moisturizes your skin, and repairs holes realllly fast. I love it, and will never go to a mountain without a fresh supply, but not sure it will help in your case. Worth a shot. It's pretty cheap here too, I use the BAR, I've used it for a few months and there's still some left. Check it out. "Clickety split"[^]

Which ever lotion you use, wrap a warm towel around you hands for 15 – 20 mins after you apply the lotion. This helps your skin absorb the lotion faster. and get well soon :-P

Or purchase a pack of cheap white cotton gloves and wear them after liberally applying the lotion.

Lemme know how it works out :) I'm going to boulder in Fontaine Bleau/France for the first time in a few days, and people claim that this stuff does wonders there. It's not uncommon for fingers to start bleeding while climbing, so anything it can do to help will be great ;) hope it helps you too

The Body Shop's Hemp Hand Protector is about the best I've found so far. http://www.thebodyshop.com/bodyshop/browse/product_detail.jsp?productId=prod5950023&categoryId=cat1010003

Except the smell ... YUCK X| I switched tot he udder cream already mentioned and it works just as well, perhaps better - less greasy feeling than the hemp cream.

You might try purchasing a pack of finger cots and try them. They don't cover the entire hand so there's less sweating invoved, but they could protect the end of the finger where you are handling the screws the most.

So this is probably for the ladies but maybe a few guys might know... I worked 7 years of my life in the grease and solvent of a road and mountain bike shop here in Boise. I've built more wheels, overhauled more bottom brackets, pressed more headsets than I care to remember but it was the solvent in the solvent tank that we used to strip grease off cranks and chains that has ruined the skin on my finger tips. They are always very dry and pretty much any outdoor activity will have them cracked and bleeding in less than a day. I've been able to find a few good lotions ($12 - $16 per 32 ounces) that do a decent job but I haven't found anything yet that makes me go... DANG! That's the stuff. Why do I mention this at CP in the lounge? Two reasons. One I might need a drug test. Two, with the people we have here from all over the world (let's not forget the edge of the world, Bull Head City) there just might be someone in a place that isn't America who knows that their country produces the finest stuff there is for someone with hands like mine. Maybe you are German, Swedish, Japanese, Indian and yes even American but hopefully you know of something that does work. The ends of my fingers have scales of skin on them and right now I could simply flick one with other finger and start bleeding. Admittedly this is a bad case from thumbing through a 20 pound bag of screws all day Sunday but still. There's got to be a fix for that somewhere though probably not in Bull Head City... So if you know of something that works. Send me links, infomercials, mysterious packages delivered by lavish, clandestine women or just a brown box. I'll promise to give it a try so long as I can safely verify it isn't napalm or some other equally wonderful product... - Rex:cool::beer:

My pharmacist friend tells me that a lotion with synthetic urea in it is what they recommend. I have a tube of no-name 20% urea cream that really helps. It ain't cheap, though. Cheers, Drew.
