Well, my existing PDA is starting to flake out on me, so I've been considering what my needs truly are in this area. When I'm on the road I have my laptop, so I don't really need the calendar, nor do I care much about a portable mp3 player. Basically, what I used it for most was bringing up a web site on my internal home network so that I can control my stereo from any part of the house. So, I'm essentially looking for a web browser that's

Yeah, even $300 is more than I want to spend, which means I'm probably looking for something that doesn't exist. Oh, well, never hurts to ask. :-D

Don't you have kids for this kind of thing? When I was young our TV and sound system had two remotes; my sister and me. My father would point and say the channel, volume, command etc. and we'd do it. More seriously; got a mobile phone? Does it have WiFi or Bluetooth? You might be able to point it at your local webserver.

Cheaper yet is a Nokia n770 on ebay from someone who had to have the n800. I've had the n770 for over a year and it works pretty good. A little flakey at times, but ok.

Thanks for the kind words. In fact, I was married in the early 90s and we raised my wife's 10 year old daughter (from a previous marraige). I'd always known that raising children wasn't really my passion in life, and the three years I spent in that capacity validated that assumption. Children should be raised by parents who are 100% into raising a family. They deserve no less. However, I did learn one thing from raising a young girl. I'm not nearly as smart as I thought I was. :-D

Basically, what I used it for most was bringing up a web site on my internal home network so that I can control my stereo from any part of the house. So, I'm essentially looking for a web browser that's

How about a used Pocket PC running Opera? Some come with 802.11 built in. Others have CF Card or SD Card slots so you can buy and use an 802.11 card. See www.pocketpcfaq.com for comparison charts. Bear in mind that small screens make browsing the web more difficult.

Well, my existing PDA is starting to flake out on me, so I've been considering what my needs truly are in this area. When I'm on the road I have my laptop, so I don't really need the calendar, nor do I care much about a portable mp3 player. I just scored a Nokia 770 from CompUsa, as the retail stores are closing in my state for $200. "All it does" is browse the web. on a decent sized screen, and a nicer (than I am used to on portable devices) capability browser. (my GMail works fine). I am intrigued by the open source Linux platform it runs on as well. (Y'know, for all the killer home automation apps that I plan on building in my mythical spare time) Of course, as with any gadget, the N800 is already out and it fills me with gadget envy. But as it's still in the high $300s, I'm pretty happy with my N770. Lloyd

Isn't the PALM Z22 a canidate for this? I really don't know much about PDAs, but this is the cheapest one I've ever run across.

I'd also like to mention that Nintendo DSes are probably able to become pretty kickbutt wireless handhelds with some hacking. Or, if you wait a little longer, you may be able to get the Opera browser for the DS! http://www.opera.com/products/devices/nintendo/
