Heck. Headphones are calming even without music. Have you ever noticed how people are hesitant to interrupt someone with headphones, because it usually requires a more "in your face" contact, like touching, to get noticed? Give it a try. I think he eventually caught on to what I was doing since I never plugged my headphones into anything (and it was quite obvious that I didn't) and he got mad adn just stopped talking to me.
