ADMIN: Server down!

Actually 3 servers. The latest batch of updates via Automatic updates has killed our 3 windows 2000 servers dead. We can resurrect them but soon enough they lock up and give you those nasty error pages. This is, to say the least, incredibly frustrating but we give up and will upgrade servers that were actually among out more reliable ones until last week to Win2003. So - until we can pull them out we'll be down 3 servers which means more load for the others and the potential for more error 500's. I'm sorry :(

you know its prolly not related but my laptop got killed a few weeks ago by a windows update ... ive had to fix 3 friends laptops that got killed in the same way and now you have 3 servers die after an update do you think there are some quality control issues going on or are they not bothering so much with anything that isnt vista anymore as an added incentive to make us upgrade? just curious...

Perhaps if Jack Welch knew of Windows Update he would have added point 14: 14. If GM made cars like Microsoft, mechanics would sneak into your garage at night and add the latest set of production faults to old faithful. A GM spokesperson said "We think all drivers should experience the thrill that the test driver gets behind the wheel of the first car off the production line. We consider that the added uncertainty of not knowing when your car will regain that 'new model' feeling achieves our objective of making the ownership experience more thrilling, something more akin to a rollercoaster ride in the dark".
At a computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated: "If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release (by Mr. Welch himself) stating:
If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:
1. For no reason at all, your car would crash twice a day.
2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road, you would have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally, executing a manoeuver such as a left-turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, and you would have to reinstall the engine.
4. When your car died on the freeway for no reason, you would just accept this, restart and drive on.
5. Only one person at a time could use the car, unless you bought 'Car95' or 'CarNT', and then added more seats.

The most common reason in my personal experience is that a downloaded package is corrupt. So as soon as the automatic updates service starts to unpack, the msi.dll kills Svchost.exe and a lot of services dies with it. My solution is to turn off automatic updates (not the service), restart, use windows update, restart if necessary and turn on automatic updates again. /Jörgen

Is it industry standard to have Automatic Updates set to "Automatic" on production servers? I've always thought that Automatic Updates are done manually (controlled) on Production Servers... But I'm just a developer who has nothing to do with network admin...:)

i think they carry on support for 5 years after a server version is replaced. I guess that'll be 2008 sometime. Russ

Like this? You have a link which update this is? I have a similar problem with a (non-microsoft) mail server/proxy on a W2K box. (We currently offer "e-mail - on - demand" to our co-workers - i.e. everytime they need e-mail, they have to ask..)

I think Microsoft (Bill Gates you listening?) should work on getting it right first, instead of letting marketing tell them that they have to push Sh-X out the door. Retooling (recoding) takes time and you have to be willing to take the time to get the kinks worked out. People should be clamering to get the product not have it shoved down their throats. While we are on the subject of Stupid stuff. What the Hxll good has WGA been, it seems to be installing every month? I would turn off updates but some updates can't be got unless WGA is installed. I guess Microsoft is like most people they name their pets the opposite of what they are, like naming a white dog Midnight or a teacup dog killer. I guess that explains Windows Genuine (dis)Advantage. Not to sound parinoid but I wonder when these AutoUpdates will wind up killing machines on a global scale. I can hear the MS line now, "well just reinstall the os... oops a lot of you didn't get one, well use your restore.. oh the OS is dead.. Well call your OEM I don't want to hear about it." Take care and be afraid..very afraid...
