How fit are we?

    Yesterday, I played backyard cricket with some friends for about 4 hours or so. This morning I woke up feeling half my body is dead. My bones and muscles ache really bad and I have pain all over my body :-( Someone was asking here (few threads below) about what food programmers need to have to stay healthy and productive. I guess it's not just enough to take care of what you eat. You've got to have some exercise too. My friend (at whose house I played) has suggested that we find a local school whose baseball ground we could use as a cricket pitch during weekends. So hopefully I am going to get fitter over the next few weeks.

        well i dunno about the rest of you but i'm not your fat, ugly, lazy programmer(no offense guys) but I work out atLEAST 3 times a week, i live in florida, right near the beach, gotta look good for all the little spring breakers, fav time of the year.

            I've been slack on going to the gym, it's been 6+ weeks, but I have been working in the yard. Not the same, I know. However, I am clocking in with the lowest weight I've been at in over 5 years, so things aren't all bad. Still, it would be nice to feel healthier, not just thinner.

                well i thank you for the luck, and i assure you, im not full of my self. I'm very reserved and quite..i just like being able to take off my shirt and not think twice about my self. I believe everyone should, too. SO GET OFF YOUR ASSES!! THERES A WHOLE WORLD OUT THERE!! and it doesn't end with Wide Web..

                        I'm in reasonably decent shape, since I use a gym three times a week, take tae kwon do classes twice a week, and kayak whenever I find the time. I spend too much time at the bar, but I compensate a little by walking to and from (about 1 mile each way). Sometimes I jog or run the route, just for variety, though running on pavement is tough on the shins. As far as diet goes, I'm terrible, but I'm trying to change my ways. Recent reading has led me to the inescapable conclusion that consuming animal products leads directly to certain kinds of cancer and heart problems, and I have eaten meat almost exclusively for years. I have no interest in going vegetarian, but I can do a lot better at balancing the input. I suppose that most of the benefits of a meatless diet can probably be realized with a low meat diet. At least, that's what I'm counting on.

                            I run three times a week, lift weights twice a week, and if the weather permits, ride my bike on the weekends. Compared to the average 45-year-old, I'm in fairly good shape. Of course, it has its hazards. I spilled the bike yesterday, so today I'm hobbling around and taking 800 mg. of ibuprofen every six hours so that my moaning doesn't piss off the folks in the cubes around me :-O.

                            Good for you, Nish! The key to fitness is to find something you like doing that requires physical activity, and then get out and do it. Don't let the other folks in this thread discourage you. I've seen it from both sides. During my 20's I smoked and didn't get any exercise other than the occasional bit of yard work. I quit smoking at 30, and started exercising shortly after. Life is much better when your body stops complaining and starts helping you enjoy things.

                                  Yeah, getting close to 30 will to that to you. :-D A light set of stretches, pushups and situps in the morning really helps out with that a lot as well as stretching before bed. I do kung fu about 4 times a week. 2 regular classes and 2 conditioning classes. Plus I occasionally hit the gym and lift weights or swim. It's still nothing compared to keeping up with an active 8 month old and he's only crawling not walking and running yet. I've lost about 30 pounds but I'm hovering about 7 pounds above my goal weight, and I'm ending a 5 month conditioning cycle so I'll probably have to get back into into something like cycling to finish it off.

                                    Nope; I was riding along, and caught a rather large bug in my mouth X|. When I turned to the side to spit it out, I was too close to the edge of the bike path, ran off the side, and tumbled into some brush. The bike was OK, I just needed to straighten a couple of things and remount the chain. Fortunately I only had about 5 miles to go to get home. My knee and elbow are scraped up, and my shoulder feels like someone has been beating on it with a sledge hammer :sigh:. The ironic thing is, I had just bought a new helmet the day before; now that it's been through an impact, I need to go buy a new one. Footnote: I don't know where the bug ended up :~.

                                        Evidently, after a week of riding some fairly nasty hills I will be riding over the Passo Del Stelvio (Ranked #1[^] in the FIETS Top Nasty Mountains page), then the next day we turn around and ride back over it, then we'll be riding up Col de la Croix de Fer [^] and then continuing along the valley to ride up Alpe d'Huez[^]. And I've been told that this will be a no-holds-barred, ride-for-the-honour, may-the-loser-be-taunted-mercilessly ride. I have 6 weeks to be in the best shape of my life. Gulp.

                                          I have been working out for the past five years. I have been counseling diet for about a year now. It is not just the diet, but physical activity too is very important. You don't need to tear up your muscles by lifting hundreds of kilos. A very good stretch session for warming up, running on open air (if it is not possible, then run on treadmill) and a little of weight exercise will keep you fit. At least forty minutes of exercise a day will be enough. The pain that you are complaining about after a session of cricket, will not be yours. :)
