So, I spent the weekend working on video capture functionality. I got everything done, all I needed to do was to test the PCMCIA capture card with it ( I actually blew up the USB one, and have been using my video camera for testing ). My notebook is probably 2 years old. It's covered in stickers, of all the bands I have seen ( those that sold stickers at the shows ). The other day, I got up from my desk, and the power cable got caught and it got pulled off the desk. However, even before that, my XP crashed, telling me that it couldn't read some files. I installed Vista instead. I actually posted the other day that I couldn't install .NET 2.0, as it's Vista, but nor could I run .NET programs, they wouldn't find the framework. Someone told me to install .NET 1.1 with such force and conviction, that I tried it. The framework installed OK, the patch wouldn't run, because it also couldn't find the framework. So, I started to copy some files off my notebook, so I could format it and start again. I found that many of my files ( none critical, thank goodness ), were unreadable. OK, I figured I'd copy everything of value off, format the drive and see what happened. I spent the evening doing this. Then I set up Vista to install and went to bed ( I formatted the drive first ). This morning, Vista can't install as it can't find it's files on my HDD, the HDD is obviously dead. Now for the heart attack. I plug my portable HDD into my desktop, and it won't read it. However, it came good after a few minutes, the files are copying to my desktop as we speak. And, I need to buy a new HDD for my notebook.

Nah, I trust two hard drives more than I trust a DVD. Although I have about 200 blanks here, and I never use them, so I guess I might as well.

I thought most people had too much data for a single DVD. I think it would take about 4 dual-layer DVDs to hold all of my personal files as I have around 30gb of files in My Documents.

Nows your chance to get a 7200 RPM drive, or perhaps a 5400rpm drive with a much higher capacity. What are the specs on your notebook?

It was a 7200 rpm drive, and the local supplier seems to only have 5400, by yeah, I will be going from 60 to 120 gig, so that's something. It was the top Dell at the time, but it's single core, has only a gig of RAM ( that was huge at the time ), etc. It does have a good OpenGL card in it. It's been a good work horse, it's been to the US 5 times, been to Singapore, it's done it's share of travel and still works fine.

I haven't had that happen yet, maybe because I check what directory I am in before I do rm -rf. Now, after this post, I am sure it might end up happening when I least expect it :->

This fear is why some of us back up our back-up drive. (just finished doing mine a few minutes ago). I still remember my wife's eyes rolling to the sky while I tried to explain why I needed to drop $200 on another portable drive.

I just keep my files synchronized between my desktop, laptop, and external hard-drive. I used to back all my files on my mp3 player but I bought an external hard-drive to replace my mp3 player as a backup medium.

Without a good test of the cardio pulmonary system how else would you know everything is working within specification? Thanks for the reminder, it’s been a while since I’ve back the critical stuff up to DVD.
