Never shop at Sears!

3 weeks ago I went to Sears and bought a brand new $300 Craftsman Lawnmower, Sunday I used it for the first time and when I did the flap on the back of the mower (1/2 metal on this mower) got caught up under the mower, got wrapped in the blade (thus bending the blade and the shaft that holds the blade) rendering the mower practically useless. Today I call Sears about the "return policy" and explained what had happened. I was told, and I quote "Well sir since you didn't purchase our 3 year extended warranty you cannot return that lawnmower, you will have to either buy a new one of purchase the parts to fix it yourself (or pay $99 an hour to have them do it". I have shopped at Sears my whole life, and bought Craftsman items for the past 22 years and I have NEVER heard of anything like this. This is just my rant, DONT EVER SHOP AT SEARS!!

I got a nice cheap lawnmower from WalMart. I figured that way if it died on me, it would be a big deal. It is going on 8 years now. Of course, where I live it snows a bit, so it only really gets used half the year. Your post makes me feel good that I didn't buy it at sears. Ben

That's surprising because I thought they have a 1 month return policy. What according to the customer service is the return period?

Do you not have any statutory consumer protection laws you could use in this case? Did you buy it on a credit/debit card? If so, you may have an automatic warranty through your card issuer.

It would certainly be a different conversation complaining about the flap on the back of your sheep getting stuck underneath; rendering it useless.

The said that if it was a manufacturer defect then I could return it. I had my wife call them and she was told "Go ahead and bring it in, we'll swap it out for you"...but they couldn't tell me that????

Unless things have DRASTICALLY changed at Sears over the last few years, ANY power tool, or tool for that matter, has always been exchanged for a new one if anything went wrong with the one you bought. Now this was about 15 years ago, but I bought an electric grass trimmer at Sears. The power switch went bad and I ordered a new one. It took so long to come in, I went back to the Sears where I bought it and they replaced it, free of charge. Knowing the kind of workers that are now being employed by a vast majority of stores (we have full employment to blame this on), he probably doesn't know that Sears has a policy of 100% satisfaction --- or has Sears become the corporate megolith that just doesn't give a damn about it's customers any more? If so, they are doomed to bankruptcy!

You expected something different? Sears is, after all just KMart hiding under another name now. (KMart bought Sears in 2005). I haven't darkened the door of a Sears store since. Actually, they had gotten pretty bad on their own before this - low quality, bad attitude, and they started (in about 1999) making exceptions on the Craftsman hand tools warranty, refusing, at the store manager's discretion, to replace anything they felt had been "abused", or was due to rust or fire damage. Husky tools still have a no questions asked lifetime return warranty.

I've yet to have a problem at ANY Sears with any Craftsman tools, I take the bad one in and get a new one, no questions asked. Thats why I'm so shocked about this lawnmower, I've never experienced this kind of crap from a Sears before. UPDATE: My wife called they told her to "bring it on in and we'll replace it for you"

Don't you have some law about consumer rights and that all goods sold must be fit for their purpose, and since it is clearly crap and useless, they have to either refund your money or give you a new one? Sometimes shops try to pretend that you need an extended warranty and so forth to cover things that are actually covered by your rights under law, at least they occasionally do in NZ, and the shop staff may not realise this, having been misinformed by their bosses. It is recommended here that such warranties are a waste of money because they tend to cover almost nothing but what is already provided by law (unless you have examined the warranty and there is something in particular that is of great value to you for some reason). You should try and talk to someone there who knows what they are talking about, but also you should try and find out your rights so you can argue effectively :)

Lat week, in England, I returned of coffee machine to ASDA (Wall Mart), it had broken after 10 months usage, and to a hiking shop a pair of boots 3 months old that had a manufacturing fault, I had a full refund on both. We have a law, 'The Sale of Goods Act', any goods not of merchantable quality must be fixed, replaced or refunded by the seller, the law states you have up to 6 years to claim, but there are certain caveats.

Take yourself and the mower to the store with a toolkit and begin repairing it outside the dept. you bought it from, I think they'll see reason, also you can return it (in the uk) within 1 year of purchase if the item was faulty, if not I have a second petrol mower 17" cut blade Honda 5cc engine I can give you for free then only problem you'll have to travel to Manchester uk to pick it up.
