What do you do about flies ?
-
I visit my fiancée's family once a week more or less, they live on a dairy and chicken farm in West Limerick. They are nice, simple people and are tolerant of me and my "city" ways. With so many cattle around there are alot of flies, particularly now with the warm weather and the mother of the family with each passing year is getting more and more aggravated by the problem. I said there has to be a solution to this problem in the world. So I was wondering what other CPians did about flies ? We have CPians from all over the world here, and large proportion from countries that are far hotter than Ireland. I can only presume you guys have a fly problem as well, if so what do you do about it?

Lots of insecticide?

Well, yes, the problem with insects is that there are lots of them, so if you kill, say, 10,000, there are still lots. Almost nothing changes.

when you have lots of flies, nothing beats lots of fly tape... basically it is sweet smelling, so attracts them unlike the electric one that just zaps them. When it fills up, toss it, keep lots on hand.

Nope, outside just use the electric ones. Flies breed more flies, its an endless cycle. To stop the flies you have to kill all the flies in one fell swoop along with all the maggots before they turn into flies.... but even if you did, they fly in from your neighbors farm. And so, outside the electric one works best, you just leave it and get as many as you can, that is all you can do. Inside, for humans use the tape.

I encourage spiders, and never let anyone kill them. We have spiders that live in specific rooms of the house, a spider or two live in my ute, they are everywhere.

I used to work on a Hog farm in Ky. while I was attending College and we used to use a product that looked like Corn Meal. We would scatter it in the morning and sweep up the stuff and the dead flies later in the day. I can't remember what we called it but it really worked. Mike

Aye. I never kill spiders, either. I think it is bad luck to kill a useful animal. Other than that, they are fascinating creatures. And if they had our dimensions, they would rule the world. And there would be no male dominace, trust me on that....

Back in the early 80's I had a girlfriend who lived on a farm near Rome, NY. She noticed that the year after the nuclear anomaly at Three Mile Island, that the number of flies on the farm was down tremendously. Do you have any nuclear power plants near by? Is the farm located down wind? If so, ...

Screens and fly tape. Also, at night, they tend to settle down and land on the ceilings - walk around with a fly swatter and you can kill a lot of them quickly. Mostly, don't freak out about them - it's just something you get used to.

My Grandfather's house had a lot of these flies and they use to clean up the place 2 times a day, used screens and meshes facing the cattle shed.

What's a ute? After ruling out the My Cousin Vinny's "two utes" I looked it up Wikipedia. Much as I would like it to be "C-6 Ute and U-21 Ute, military variants of the Beechcraft King Air Model 90" I suspect that what you actually own is the much more mundain "colloquial term used in Australia and New Zealand to refer to a pickup truck"
