I visit my fiancée's family once a week more or less, they live on a dairy and chicken farm in West Limerick. They are nice, simple people and are tolerant of me and my "city" ways. With so many cattle around there are alot of flies, particularly now with the warm weather and the mother of the family with each passing year is getting more and more aggravated by the problem. I said there has to be a solution to this problem in the world. So I was wondering what other CPians did about flies ? We have CPians from all over the world here, and large proportion from countries that are far hotter than Ireland. I can only presume you guys have a fly problem as well, if so what do you do about it?

The Simpson's solution would be to get yourself a flea collar, as long as they don't know what that is or they don't think you're into S&M, you'll be okay. Just tell them it's for your neck problem. :-D

Screens and fly tape. Also, at night, they tend to settle down and land on the ceilings - walk around with a fly swatter and you can kill a lot of them quickly. Mostly, don't freak out about them - it's just something you get used to.

My Grandfather's house had a lot of these flies and they use to clean up the place 2 times a day, used screens and meshes facing the cattle shed.

I encourage spiders, and never let anyone kill them. We have spiders that live in specific rooms of the house, a spider or two live in my ute, they are everywhere.

What's a ute? After ruling out the My Cousin Vinny's "two utes" I looked it up Wikipedia. Much as I would like it to be "C-6 Ute and U-21 Ute, military variants of the Beechcraft King Air Model 90" I suspect that what you actually own is the much more mundain "colloquial term used in Australia and New Zealand to refer to a pickup truck"

My little sister went to India with family friends who immigrated to America from a rural area in India. You are not allowed to kill spiders in their village or household for just this reason. I don't know how common this practice is, but after a few weeks my sister got used to the spiders (they were everywhere!) and gained a new respect for ecological solutions to pest problems. I do imagine, however, that widespread adoption of the spider tolerance stance is necessary to make this work. Regards.

Never throw away the bottle top for your beer. After drinking some put the top back on so the flies can't get in. :-D I learned that trick at the "Fly Bar" in the village.
