      My father-in-law suffered a heart attack this week, so my wife flew out to see him. The surgery was postponed a day so she wanted to stay an extra day. She called US Airways and was told the change would cost $400! Mind you, there are seats available on all the legs of the trip (or were when the call was made) and all it would take is a few computer keystrokes. I could see a $25 fee, but one that is almost the same price as a new ticket? What makes this even more irritating is that US Airways brags about how their customers are first. Yeah, sure. (Ironically, people often criticize Southwest Airlines yet they are the only airline I've never had troubles with. I even bought a last minute ticket once from them where I had to run to get the flight and they still only charged me the same as if I'd purchased the ticket a month earlier. Too bad they didn't fly where my wife had to go--damn father-in-law.)

      Is your FIL okay? I don't fly often and the only major airline in the area is Northwestern which has consistently gotten bad marks on customer service. I know we have had the discussion before, but I think Air New Zealand is the best.

        I hate Continental myself - lost luggage, day-long delays ( 10 hours in NewArc airport ). I think Delta may be a semi-decent alternative.

          I fly Delta for most long trips. I've had only minor problems with them. (Biggest problem with them is when I get stuck on an MD-80 or 757. I also hate the small regional planes and will opt for Southwest for those destinations.) I have a friend who used to fly Continental all the time. His philosophy was that they sucked so bad nobody else used them so he had lots of room. (At one point they also had an outrageously good frequent flier program in attempt to make themselves suck less.)

            He decided to be stubborn and refused bypass surgery. The doctor told him that was fine as long as he stayed in a place convenient to pick up his dead body. That changed his mind and he's going under the knife tomorrow. (I'm hoping they get the robotic don't-have-to-crack-the-rib-cage bypass surgery perfected before it's my turn.)

              I guess that would depend on your definition of "free". If you mean free as in you don't have to give the person bringing your drink to you $5, then yes it's free. If you mean free as in you lose $50 at the blackjack table waiting for the person to bring you your free drink, then no it isn't really free..... :-)

                  My father died before the age of 60 because of a heart attack, so I hope his surgery goes well. I really do--by the time i was 21 i was an orphan.

                    Same here, you don't get a lot of "customer service" while you're actually on the plane, but they take-off and land on time more often than anybody else and prices are good.
