I was thinking more along the lines of Mexicans, Brazilians, Chillians, Colombians etc. all being Americans too. Being an American has been hijacked by the USA and reinforced by the rest of the world. (Like I am a South African and an African.)

Last time I looked Canada was a part of North America as well. ;) See you can't win and there is no other easy to say phrase or word that describes a US citizen.

It is even worse for Canadian's as they get lumped under the US American banner too often. Easy to confuse Canadians for USAians. People don't confuse Brazilians for "Americans."

yeah, I knew what you getting at. It comes up here once in a while that Americans are really everyone in the western hemisphere. The thing is there isn't another word that rolls off the tongue that can be used. US Americans, I suppose, but usually the context of a statement makes the clarification unnecessary. If the USA had been named Elbonia instead, I'm certain we wouldn't refer to ourselves as Americans to stake a claim that we are the true (and only important) Americans. I say that just to point out that hijacking the term has a connotation that think is invalid. I think it's more an evolution of language than any intentional snub at our continent-mates. Out of curiosity, do non-US Americans refer to themselves as Americans typically, or is it more standard to say Panamanian, Canadian, Brazilian, etc...?

One of the ironies is how to recognize one. There are all kind of reports and suggestions and hints for various agencies. But how I comb/cut my hair, whether or not I stutter, and what I am driving (how clean the car is for example) all determine whether or not I get stopped and questioned. :)

Except there are 2 continents that have the word "America" so it's much more common to refer to residents as North American or South American. Combine that with the fact that the USA and American Samoa are the only 2 countries with the word "America" in their names (the latter is an unincorporated territory of the former) and our "hijacking" of the term "American" seems logical. Yes?

For anyone that saw my post yesterday about our now dead Canon Powershot S1, I have an update. I called their customer service folks this morning and not only will they fix the camera, but they pay for shipping - both ways! I even got to talk to a real live AMERICAN! This is by far the best customer service experience I've had in a long, long time. Canon has won a permanent customer.

(US customers may get US or Canada and that's the same for Canadians. Mexico has it's own CS.) But I'm glad about your great Canon experience. I invested in a Minolta system and now they are pretty much kaput.

I spoke to suppliers all over the U.S. and some states have truly incomprehensible accents, I'd rather deal with someone in Bangalore than South Carolina. :)
