Guitar Heros
-
I've been playing this game a lot lately. It has sure made me a lot more aware about guitars in music. I now often listen to just the guitar in a song rather than the song as a whole. I think the final track on Guitar Hero II is a really awesome masterpiece in the art of shredding: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird. Whenever I hear it, I get magically swooped away in the guitar solos. Purple Haze almost. ;P Do you know of a song with an awesome guitar solo that makes you all tingly inside? (Did I just say tingly inside? :~)
To be perfectly honest, the Freebird solo is pretty easy. It's amazingly repetitious. If you master one part, you have the entire thing. I learned to hate this solo because it's so boring to play. I'm not sure how it would translate to Guitar Hero, but it's very boring on a real guitar.

Well I thought the EVH's solo in MJ's "Beat It" was pretty cool. VH's "Jump" has a nice EVH solo. Yes's Trevor Rabin in "Owner of a Lonely Heart" Prince's solo in "When Doves Cry" Some of the work by Strunz and Farrah is pretty damn cool.

 I'm trying to score 100% on that one on hard. I'm up to 96% now! It's that ultrafast stuff in the end that keeps pushing me down. :( Trogdor on expert is just evil. :wtf: Also worth playing is Thunderhorse! :-D

Satch - Surfing with the Alien. Vai - The Audience Is Listening. Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower.
Deja View - the feeling that you've seen this post before.
I don't know the first one, but you've got my 5 for the second two. :)
Anna :rose: Linting the day away  Anna's Place | Tears and Laughter "If mushy peas are the food of the devil, the stotty cake is the frisbee of God"

Satch = Joe Satriani - technically excellent guitarist, but possibly lacking in feeling?

That's why I picked Surfing. It's one of the few ones where he lets go and sounds like he's just having fun. It's not his most technically advanced track - it's just good honest shredding.

Probably something by Frank Zappa - Yo Mama, or King Kong (live versions, please!), the first half of Apostrophe (let's ignore the yellow snow lyrics for the moment :-)) Or I could probably find something off Birds of Fire by Mahavishnu Orchestra - John McLaughlin is soooo good. Or maybe Steve Hillage - I've always loved his sound, whether it's his solo albums or the ones he did with Gong. Or Jan Akkerman (Focus) My other, more recent, guitar hero would be Wata from Boris - it's not about technical excellence, but the aural textures she adds to the band's sound. Brilliant.

Here are a few more to check out. RATT -- Morning After. The Cascading triplets at the end have always gotten to me DLR -- Shy Boy. Billy Sheehan and Steve Vai really tear this one up. Winger -- Seventeen. The outro by Reb Beach has some serious flash. Ozzy -- Crazy Train. The late great Randy Rhodes blisters eardrums here. Dokken -- Mr. Scary. More of an instrumental than strictly a solo, but with more than 20 guitar tracks there is more than enough to satisfy. Jimmy Hendrix -- pick one. Van Halen -- again, pick one. To the guy who said that Joe Satriani lacks emotion in his play. Dead wrong. That man has great emotion in addition to his technical skill. The reason he's not more mainstream is that nearly all of his songs are instrumentals and that doesn't fit well into the record industry's formula for making them money. They want lyrics so they can market the music easier. Witness American Idol.
