Well, I spent the last two days downloading and installing: .NET 3.0 Windows SDK and all of the other recommend apps. Oh yea, I also installed the last Windows Media Player. The result, now I have a few bugs. 1. There is a svchost process that hangs up using 50% CPU. 2. Windows won't run login scripts 3. Sound devices are lost 4. The system will render windows sometimes in classic or XP style or XP style then refresh to classic I uninstalled everything and for the most everything is fine except Sound devices and login scripts. Any thoughts?

Well shoot! there's your mistake. Now you have advanced DRM. Only a reformat will work.

Seriously, I have had all of the above EXCEPT the media player for some time on XP Sp2. No problems whatsoever. WMP is evil.

I don't know some of the problems were there before the install WMP.

I have no idea about your problem, but in the last days I'm seeing loads of weird things happening to computers (including mine). :-D Probably the first heat of summer is melting them down. :~

I'd love to see the algorithm for the 'shuffle' function. I have over 200 songs on my work laptop and it constantly picks about about 10 of those.

It turns out that the svchost, sound devices and rendering are related to a MS Update recently released. I restarted the machine and then using an app. called ProcessExplorer.com, I found the wsus.exe was in the pot as a problem. So, then I at the command prompt typed 'tasklist /svc' and inspected the locked up process included every service that I was having issues with. So, it looks like the problems with the .NET 3.0 installation were actual caused by something else. Tomorrow after installing all patches and fixes, I will try the .NET 3.0 again.

Orcas web dev first. I had .NET 2.0 already. Then windows SDK. That's it.
