I came across this interesting puzzle lately, see what you can make of ... A DIGITAL CLOCK in a WEB page SHOWS both date and time. The FORMAT is hh:mm:ss month/day Its a 24-hour clock (times range from 00:00:00 to 23:59:59) Now the question is, If all 10 digits 0 - 9 appear on the display What is -------(a) The Earliest -------(b) The latest DATE AND TIME in the year This will happen? Another question i was pondering, How does a spring balance works, if it depends on spring, how is it so accurate ?

Unless you exceed the elastic limit (the point where it's stretched/compressed to the point it bends and doesn't return to the original state) a spring expands and contracts under a force at an (almost) constant linear rate. The almost is due to fatigue and the difference between real materials and the idealized freshman physics problems that will over extended periods of time slowly alter the response curve. WIth a good spring though the effect is small enough and slow enough in happening that it can be ignored for normal purposes.

-- You have to explain to them [VB coders] what you mean by "typed". their first response is likely to be something like, "Of course my code is typed. Do you think i magically project it onto the screen with the power of my mind?" --- John Simmons / outlaw programmer

I guessed 23:48:59 06/17 and 17:56:43 09/28. Your earliest beats mine, but my latest beats yours.

Wouldn't the ambient temperature have a big effect on that? Here in Canada on the gas pumps they always say "calibrated to 15c". When I used to live up north just off the Alaska highway I always got some satisfaction when it was -40 thinking about how much extra gas I was getting because it was so far off the calibration point for the pump until I realized that underground the main gas tank is probably still at 15c anyway.

Just swap a couple of numbers around and you get 17:48:59 03/26.

also, the gas itself expands and contracts with temperature. IIRC, Canadian gas pumps account for that, but in the US they don't. so you get more gas for your $ when it's cold out, down here. more, here

That's why I tell my wife to only buy gas in the relative cool of the morning. Our forecast high today in Phoenix is 110F. -- But it's a dry heat.

Some, but again it's a small effect for normal materials. You can engineer for the effect to make a thermometer but that type of spring isn't used in a scale obviously ;p
