It took 7 hours to get 437 songs on my shiny new iPod after cherry-picking songs from the first 100 or so of our 600 CD collection. Observations: 1) The EQ settings are inadequate. Why didn't they implement a EQ that allows the user to set levels for individual frequency ranges? How stupid. 2) The thing weighs quite a bit. 3) iTunes still sucks donkey balls. I am using FreeRip to rip the songs off the CDs to MP3, and then I use SharePod (many thanks to whoever suggested this software) to move the songs from the PC to the iPod. 4) When I go to the genre selection screen, one of the items is "(89) Bluegrass". I only have about half a dozen songs that were added to "bluegrass", and when I select "All", that's how many it shows me. What does the "89" actually indicate? 5) Are there better headphones available that anybody can recommend? This might mitigate my EQ complaints a little bit. I'm looking for something that's small enough to be portable. 6) I almost ran off the road playing with this thing, so I think I want to get a car adapter do-hicky. None of the cigarette lighter adapters that securely hold the iPod will let me use the protective case that I already bought. Does anyone have any advice here?

I use some sony headphones that kind of look like buds on the headband, but the buds go in sideways. They are about $10 at Best Buy. I am going to invest in the Bose noise cancelling headphones. They are larger, but they ROCK. I tried them at Target and I can't believe the sound quality. For the holder, just go to Best Buy. They have tons of stuff of iPods (and not Creative Zen...grr.)

437 songs. Pah. My current stats are 10,821 songs, which is 805 albums by 378 artists. :) 1. I never use the EQ settings on my iPod, because when I've tried, they all sound pretty crappy. 2. Is yours an 80GB? I've run out of space on my 4G 20GB and am looking to upgrade RSN. 3. I'm interested to know what don't you like about iTunes. I like it lots now, but hated it at first. I bought a copy of Anapod and wasn't impressed. That was a while ago though. FWIW I rip my CDs using a combination of Exact Audio Copy/LAME (as MP3s using VBR 'preset-extreme' mode). 4. No idea. 5. I am still using the supplied buds. 6. Guess it depends on the car. I am getting a VW Golf in a month or two that comes with an iPod kit (hidden away in the centre armrest, which is pretty cool) which allows you to control the iPod via controls on the steering column. Sweet.

I'm perfectly happy just to rip using iTunes and dumping as-is to my iPod nano. Then again I my be tone deaf! ;)

I bought a cigarette lighter adapter for my Zune that isn't Zune specific, one end is the cigarette plug and the other end a mini-jack with an FM transmitter in the middle. I think it might have been a Monster, but don't really know. Paid like $20 for it. I don't know if that is something you are looking for but, I like it because it works with any protective cases and works with iPod or Zune.

I have actually given up a little on inventotying my current collection. I seem to have filled up over 800 gigabytes of drive space with music from every genre and cross genre you could imagine. I personally use a sandisk mini player and fill it up as needed. I have no hope of putting any percentage of a collection on one of those things and I find windows media player works fine. My 2C.

What are your impressions of the Zune? I am waiting around until the larger drives are available but I was thinking of switching from my Ipod to the Zune.

The supplied earbuds with music players are always rubbish. I use Sony MDR-EX71 earbuds (available in basic black[^] or pretentious white[^]) with both my Minidisc player and my computer at work. They're not quite comfortable enough to wear all day, though.

That's where I got the iPod, and I scoured the pegboards for something that would fit the bill. I want to be able to charge the device while it's plugged in/playing, so a number of the available auto adapters don't meet my requirements. The people that make the protective case (Griffin) also make the "RoadTrip", but it's device retaining bracket isn't wide enough to accommodate the case. I fired off an email to them, asking if they make an appropriate bracket. I'm not optimistic, though. Those Bose headphones are way expensive. :(

You may want to try Media Monkey[^], it'll rip (and play) most formats and will synch with the ipoo. Try some Shure EC2 earphones (or similarly price Sennheisers).

The software isn't the greatest... better than iTunes in my opinion though. I like it and the interface makes sense to me. Firmware updates are quite regular, its nice to know that Microsoft is working on fixing its issues and improving the device, rather than fixing it in the next "version" (maybe the Zune 360 :D ). My favorite part is its not an iPod. It annoys me to know end when people just assume that all MP3 players are iPods. On a side note my fiancee loves her Zune, the only thing she doesn't like about it is that they came out with a pink Zune after i bought her a white one.

437 songs. Sweet.

I don't just willy-nilly zap an entire CD onto it. Most of the CDs I've bought have maybe one or two decent songs, so I'm cherry-picking. It's looking like it's going to take a couple of weeks to go through our entire CD collection. I anticipate having no more than 2000 songs.

It's interface is completely unintuitive to me (I've got 7.2 installed). Maybe I need to buy a book (which is STUPID).

I would be careful with a car charger/adapter, depending on the length of your drive it can be easy to kill the battery with short incomplete charges.

I listen to allot of indie music which has a tendency to offer a much larger free sample base. Often if i have enjoyed the demos I will buy the album or songs I like. Also, I started collecting CD's when I was fresh in college and did not have other financial obligations, also, used stores have helped out a great bit.

I probably have the answer for your fourth point, even if I don't own an Ipod. Back when ID3 was far from standardized, MP3 players used to tag the genre using proprietary fields, and one of the formats was (GENRE_CODE) GENRE_NAME. Some of those wrong tags went even into CDDB services, so if you rely on automatic tagging based on CDDB you will sometimes get this kind of errors. Probably stripping ID3V1 & ID3V2 tags, and retagging those song with a modern software (like MusicBrainz Picard) will fix them.

I can top bad genere tagging. One of my Ramstien cds had a cover of Depeche Mode's Stripped. What I got from the CDDB tagged it as a completely different song (the only thing right was that it was English not German). And ofc if you've warezed your mp3's cthulu only knows what you got.

Do you think i magically project it onto the screen with the power of my mind?" --- John Simmons / outlaw programmer
