LOL - yeah, I'm still not game to have it done, although I can't anyhow, because of my astigmatism.

I'm sorry, but I have to comment on your english here. Well done. This is one of the nicest ways you could possibly put this idea. Anyway - when you say you have bad eyesight now, what do you mean? Are you short-sighted, or do you have other eye problems such as astigmatism?

Why not? My squash partner had WaveFront surgery on his eyes to correct his astigmatism.

I know a guy who had it done. In bright daylight he can see great, but he has bad problems in dim light. I prefer good sight in every light except 99% darkness, so I'd still wear glasses, even if I hadn't any astigmatism.

Corinna, don't you have a bottle of NaCl-Solution handy? I used to buy them along with the cleaning fluid. If the lense was too dry or I got into a dry environment, I would occasionally drop a little of it onto my lenses - voila, no problem :)

Sometimes it was not possible, because in an instant - I didn't find out why - my eye became so red and swollen that I wasn't able to open it anymore. Tears were streaming out of it like rivers, but the lense itself was hidden unreachably under the eyelid. Very uncomfortable situation. It happened mostly in the evenings. I threw away my soft lenses in 1997, since then I'm back to glasses.

I scuba dive and have had corrective lenses made that are attached to the inside of my dive mask. My husbands eyes are much better than mine but still near-sighted and he uses a standard mask with snap-in off-the-shelf corrective lenses. I'd be surprised if somebody doesn't make something similar for swim goggles. Judy

I have worn soft contact lenses for over 30 years with no ill-effects whatsoever and was quite an active sportsman. I now wear weekly disposables that I can sleep in. I have not needed any solutions since I started wearing them and my eyes are as healthy as ever (they were checked at the weekend). I use AcuVue Oasys which allow a lot more oxygen to get to the eye. I have also swum/snorkelled and scuba dived (not deep) in them with no problems. Twice in all that time (but not with these lenses) they have slipped up into the eye: uncomfortable but they always came back around after a short while. These are, without doubt, the most comfortable lenses I have ever worn. Since I have now started to get a bit long sighted as well I suggested to my optician that I try monovision: bit weird the first week but now I wouldn't go back. Essentially I have the correct lens strength in my left eye and a slightly weaker lens in my right. Perfect. Go for lenses: you won't look back. :-)

I understand that this more or less is how radial keratotomy (the surgery for nearsightedness) was discovered. A young boy in Russia was hit in the eye with a light bulb which lacerated the surface of his cornea. After the eye healed, the vision in that eye was greatly improved. The attending doctor used this discovery to develop the surgical technique for correcting myopia. < I believe that this is more or less how it happened. >

Or he could have fallen from his bike while wearing glasses. Or he could have suffered glass splinters in one eye as a result of a fight (maybe this is the light bulb to which you refer).

The result of a hard lense shattering in your eye after being hit by a ball is not desireable. Trust me on that. Either wear sports glasses or have a laser correction (if possible). Soft lenses might be an alternative, but you have a hell of a time trying to get them out if they get pushed into the socket.

I've never had a problem with soft lenses in ten years, and that includes much abuse, such as leaving them in for days, sleeping with them in, etc.

I had my eyes corrected years ago and I had astigmatism in both eyes.
