Digital Rebel XTi and Nikon D40X - the grip issue

I just noticed that Vunic has bought the Canon. Until yesterday I too was determined to get the Canon. But yesterday I went to Best Buy to get a new printer cartridge and I checked out both cameras. I was surprised to find that I couldn't get a comfortable grip on the Canon. The cameras looked about the same size, so it may be a shape issue or some ergonomics related design issue here. As long as my grip didn't feel right, I don't think I'd feel happy using the camera. I liked the grip I got on the Nikon. For a 100 bucks less and a better grip, I am prepared to ignore the minor advantages the Canon has - like support for older nonAF lenses. So it looks as if I will go with the D40X. Anyone else here own a D40X?

Also the camera with it's dim golden lines over the lenses and the labels on the body,looks "classical" more than giving a "digital" look. The box it's packed looked great too, though it's of little significance.. I liked the packing. Overall It can make a nice present..huh, when someone's going to present a gift like that to me:sigh:.

My latest book : C++/CLI in Action / Amazon.com linkAs far as ergonomics goes, you can't go past the Olympus E-500 IMHO. As soon as I held it, it just felt right. The size, the shape, the balance, everything. The only down side to it is the slightly smaller than normal viewfinder, but I'm used to it now, and you can get a magnifying eye piece for it too. Pity the new Olympus models don't feel as good in the hand. Cheers, Anthony.

What really changed my mind was the feel of the d40x body. Its really all about personal preferences since technical advantages doesn't really differ that much (thanks to CP members who helped me last week with this very same dilemma:-D). 1 thing though I've to warn you about d40x is that its very much picky when it comes to lens. all nikkor lens are compatible with the body but only AF lens has autofocus. Still it gets you the manual/professional feeling of the camera. I suggest you go with what you're comfortable with. Good luck!:cool:

I don't trust the kit lens comes with these cameras and I bought the body only and one of the Canon L series lens. To me a camera is as good as the lens and canon has more choices for the lenses. Since D40/D40X has no motor in the body, my choice is limited. Also I like the canon's image processing a little bit better than Nikon (it is just a personal preference, nothing to to with the quality of the camera).

I don't know whether canon support any old nonAF lens. They support all EOS lenses which they first released in 1987. All of them are AF. But a lot of good cheap lenses(prime) are available.

Hey Madhu, Yes, almost all reviews and comparisons of the two cameras mention the lens compatibility issues. But in my case I doubt if that would make much of a difference. I am going for the kit lens and I don't see myself buying another lens in the near future. But after your post I am confused once again. :-) On a different note, I wonder if Nikon has any not-so-expensive lenses that I could opt for instead of the default kit lens. Thanks for your comments btw. It's put me back to my indecision-mode, though I am still slanted towards the Nikon. But I'll give the two cameras more of a trial (holding them in a store, playing with them etc.) before I buy one of them.
