Well you could probably take over France if you held up the nearest policeman with a water pistol, and from there your demands just might be met. :-D Just kidding. Phil

I'll be travelling to Germany in a few weeks time, which unfortunately necessitates a trip through France to get there. ;P Every route I generate no matter which mapping source I use tells me to drive across a river... From the aerial photographs it is hard to tell if there is a tunnel there, I think there must be, otherwise has a road been built since the photos were taken? It appears to show a lumber boat, and the road arrives at the other side in the middle of a lumber yard so it isn't a ferry crossing. Live Maps link showing the crossing[^] How or where would you recommend I cross the river, bearing in mind I will be coming from the general England direction and want to join the B33 (E581?) heading south. I have to do the whole journey from Calais within 11 hours so can't afford any 100 mile+ detours. My grandfather is the only other person I know to ask about crossing the Rhine, and he responded that he couldn't help -- the last time he did it he was flying over the top. *ahem*

Hello David, There's a bridge over the Rhine at Altenheimer Hof, but the roads on the German side are local roads. Depending on your destination, I would recommend another route. Hartmut

Hello David, I just had a look to my silly, good old printed map dated 2005/2006. This printed map shows the road crossing the river Rhine. And as far as I rembember, having traveled freeway A5 (Frankfurt to Basel) for several times during the last years the Exit 55 (Offenburg) shows that you can leave to freeway here to go to France. ... And even if everything goes wrong, there is a bridge over the Rhine about 10 KM north, connecting Strassbourg (France) to Kehl (Germany). Have a fine and save trip !!

Meh, if your grandfather made it, why don't you? Young snotty boy, relying on daddy-daddy- achievements. I doesn't look like a bridge, but you better trust the locals posts above. If you make it to the backward places of the far east[^]t, and don't mind the "Putin was here"[^] signs, there's a well-tempered beer waiting for you. Well, two. Wait, you also have to try... you catch my drift?

Oh, weird, I searched for a driving route between london and berlin and copied the url, but I guess the info wasn't in the url. Stupid msn, I don't like it, it was also paralyzed between 3 districst of paris when I had entered paris, france and several different options for berlin, germany.

Where are you going too in Germany? The roads in that area are a pain when crossing the border. On the other side of the Rhine where you're looking, you'll hit the Black Forrest - the roads through there are a pain (especially if you get stuck behing a dutchman pulling a caravan!). I always found it quicker to drive from Calais to Belgium (there is a motorway/Autobahn along the south border which is rarely used and never busy (as it goes near nowhere). To get to Southern Germany (Bavaria) it tended to take an hour or so less. Also, you don't need to go on a toll road!

                        Regards, Ray
