PCLinuxOS[^] has got to be the drop-dead easiest Linux to install - in fact, it's one of the easiest OS installs I have ever experienced. It is also easy to configure, easy to use, and the desktop is flat-out gorgeous. I'm using it more and more and have a feeling that I'll try to find an excuse to upgrade my home development machine so that I can use my current box to run PCLOS. You can check out their hardware database[^] to check if your machine is OK. I would think your laptop is OK since it seems fairly recent. Make sure you have enough RAM (256K minimum - more of course is better) since any Linux distro will run better.

I run a dual-boot with PCLinuxOS and it seems to be a nice distro

Pretty much any distro should work fine if you don't run KDE or GNOME, but opt for something more lightweight instead, i.e. Xfce[^]

I believe PCLOS uses KDE, but don't quote me on this however since I'm still pretty much an ignoramus when it comes to Linux. I've got it running on an old P3/450MHz and it feels like it's running on a P4/3MHz. To be honest, I'm not really running anything too heavy on it right now, but Open Office seems pretty snappy.

I'm sure you don't mean 3MHz. That's not exactly the fastest clock you could be running at.;P

Lot of good advice has been on the earlier posts. I definately would upgrade to 1gb RAM as you will find 256 limiting. You can try Xubuntu http://www.xubuntu.org/[^], as it uses the ubuntu base but has the Xfce desktop environment which is suppose to be less on requirements. Edit: (Hit that post button too fast)... To be honest your hardware is pretty good to try any linux disto. I consider myself a newbie but tried alot of distros, from Xubuntu, Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Mandrake and Fedora, and found Fedora to be my flavour of preference. :-D What i'm trying to say is no matter what anyone tells, the best thing is to try a couple of distros and see which one you prefer. Check out www.linuxquestions.org[^] as they have screenshots of distros and some articles/forum posts that might help. And don't forget to come back and update us on how your doing!!!!!!!:) Good luck Rick -- modified at 17:15 Sunday 22nd July, 2007

Do you use it with wireless connection?  Ubuntu seems to be the friendliest when setting up wireless, just curious about PCLinuxOS and experiences with it.  For the heck of it, I am going to go look at it :-D

Yeah I'm all wireless here at home and I was surprised at how simple it was to setup. Just entered the network name, the WEP key and I was on in no time.

Sorry about that Paul, I forgot I changed to WAP a couple months back (this was my first wireless setup and when I found out WAP is much more secure I changed) so yes it does support WAP. My bad

I just did about two/three weeks ago and it broke the wireless with Ubuntu.  There are workarounds to get WPA to work on Ubuntu, but there's too much arm twisting involved  I am going to look at PCLinuxOS then :-D

That is how I felt when I first ran into Ubuntu two years ago.  No problem getting wireless to work compared to Redhat.  As I post this, I am downloading PCLinuxOS to give it a whirl :-D

Nice isn't it? Its the easiest distro I've found to setup and run. I also like the fact you can run it from the LiveCD before ever installing it.

That is really nice. Ubuntu 7 has that feature as well, but the winner with PCLinuxOS is being able to setup the wireless with WPA. Little or no effort, well, only effort was to get up and get the ESSID and PSK  I have to say it is a very nice Linux distro :-D

I'm rather impressed with it too since I'm really not a Linux "guru". They really made it easy to use. Now if there was just a way to get my development software to work on it I'd be truly happy ;P

If you don't kow about it already you might want to try: PC-BSD[^] instead of Linux.

I'm sure you don't mean 3MHz. That's not exactly the fastest clock you could be running at.;P

Umm, yeah - even slower than my old IBM PC at 4.77(?) MHz Sorry, meant 3 GHz of course
