Some info about Linux Distro

I have a laptop with this config: Acer Aspire 3682 WXCi Intel celeron M 1.6 ghz 533MHZ FSB 1MB L2 CACHE RAM 256 (I can upgrade upto 1 G) 60 GB HDD I just want to know which Linux distro will work fine in above config?

Lot of good advice has been on the earlier posts. I definately would upgrade to 1gb RAM as you will find 256 limiting. You can try Xubuntu http://www.xubuntu.org/[^], as it uses the ubuntu base but has the Xfce desktop environment which is suppose to be less on requirements. Edit: (Hit that post button too fast)... To be honest your hardware is pretty good to try any linux disto. I consider myself a newbie but tried alot of distros, from Xubuntu, Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Mandrake and Fedora, and found Fedora to be my flavour of preference. :-D What i'm trying to say is no matter what anyone tells, the best thing is to try a couple of distros and see which one you prefer. Check out www.linuxquestions.org[^] as they have screenshots of distros and some articles/forum posts that might help. Yeah I'm all wireless here at home and I was surprised at how simple it was to setup. Just entered the network name, the WEP key and I was on in no time.

Sorry about that Paul, I forgot I changed to WAP a couple months back (this was my first wireless setup and when I found out WAP is much more secure I changed) so yes it does support WAP. My bad

Sorry about that Paul, I forgot I changed to WAP a couple months back (this was my first wireless setup and when I found out WAP is much more secure I changed) so yes it does support WAP. My bad

I just did about two/three weeks ago and it broke the wireless with Ubuntu. There are workarounds to get WPA to work on Ubuntu, but there's too much arm twisting involved :laugh: I am going to look at PCLinuxOS then :-D

I didn't have a problem getting it to work on PCLinuxOS, I was rather surprised with how easy it was to setup overall

That is how I felt when I first ran into Ubuntu two years ago. No problem getting wireless to work compared to Redhat. As I post this, I am downloading PCLinuxOS to give it a whirl :-D

I downloaded it, burned iso to cd, ran it on my laptop, config'ed the WPA on wireless, and posting this message from it :-D "That's no moon, it's a space station" - Obi-Wan Kenobi

Nice isn't it? Its the easiest distro I've found to setup and run. I also like the fact you can run it from the LiveCD before ever installing it.

That is really nice. Ubuntu 7 has that feature as well, but the winner with PCLinuxOS is being able to setup the wireless with WPA. Little or no effort, well, only effort was to get up and get the ESSID and PSK :laugh: I have to say it is a very nice Linux distro :-D

I'm rather impressed with it too since I'm really not a Linux "guru". They really made it easy to use. Now if there was just a way to get my development software to work on it I'd be truly happy ;P

Didn't know about PC-BSD, thanks for the link! For the original author that posted the linux distro question, just checked the requirements: Minimum system requirements Pentium or higher (686) 256MB Ram 4GB of free Hard Drive space (Either partition, or entire disk) Network card Sound card
