I'm helping a mate out who has hit a bit of bad luck. He's unempoyed and recently was home invaded and as well as kicking a few teeth out they kicked crap out of his computer. Silly bastard went out a bought a few parts with a loan he got before I could have a look over his system. He needed a power supply, HDD and video card but I didn't know at that point if the computer (P4 2.66GHz) was in working order. I pulled out the air compressor and blew enough crap out of the heat sink to plant potatoes in. So it has a DVD-ROM, DVD-R, floppy, 1GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 256MD video, video capture, modem, fluro lights with power switch and I think a SPDIF thingy. It powers up nicely, all the lights on the motherboard light up abd all fans go, but no BIOS beeps or display. Probably means that the motherboard/CPU/RAM is gone. Anyone have any ideas of what else it could be? I have RAM I can swap out for testing but no CPU or M/B, any help appreciated.

Bad RAM or Video will still give you beeps! No beeps means 1) the BIOS chip has conked 2) CPU has conked out 3) worst case whole MOBO is gone Check if the CPU and the BIOS chips are plugged in properly. Worst case, to check if the CPU is really powering up, remove the heatsink and boot up and leave for about 30 seconds. If the CPU gets warm(hot), probably that's OK enough(no guarantees though).

Hang on, I'm driving straight to the airport now... Without wishing to teach granny to suck eggs have you ensured that all the connectors are, well, connected to the right connections and that the CPU and memory are properly seated in their seats? no obvious cracks or loose bits on the MB? Hey, how the hell would I know? I just work here...

          1. the internal speaker is missing/disconnected. I've seen some new cases without one, and in my experience the wires for it are somehow much more fragile than anything else. I've busted wires to several of them but never any other wiring.

Reseated RAM, replugged in all power cables, checked capacitors for splits (all good) had a good look at motherboard but haven't yet cracked the CPU heatsink seal. Leaving that as a last resort.

Reseat the processor and test it again with just processor, motherboard, speaker and power supply. Pull all the memory out and disconnect all the cables. That should give you a beep if anything should. If that doesn't work, check the back of the motherboard, something could have fallen back there and caused a short.

If the machine was really physically damaged, the motherboard could have fine cracks in its circuit paths that would brickify it.    First, I would try swapping RAM around, or removing all of it entirely to see if you then get any beeps.  If so, you have narrowed it down to the memory or its slots.  Then move forward from there.    Peace!

You're right about that! Though, I've seen MOBO's that have a small speaker embedded on the board itself.

Were people (most often drug addicts) bust into your home and if your lucky enough to be home they will kick three shades of shit out of you if they leave it to hands and feet only. Then they will take anything and everything of value to pawn to get their next hit.

You're right about that! Though, I've seen MOBO's that have a small speaker embedded on the board itself.

interesting. I don't think I ever saw that one before. I'd think the 2 digit 7 segment display on some of my boards would be a more useful diagnostic tool and it's not really any bigger than the minispeaker.

                                          1. I don't suppose anyone by chance "tested" the power supply without a motherboard attached? depending on power supply, an unloaded test of a PC powersupply will render the power supply: non-functional. 2) blowing dirt out of the heatsink could mean an overheated CPU, or dead CPU 3) kicking a computer while it is up could have resulted in a brief gap between heatsink and CPU, an air-bubble between the two heats up fast and activates the auto-off on the chip to prevent overheating. Although this is a relatively new thing, I believe it came in the P4 line. Taking the heatsink off, cleaning it properly (google or ask if unsure), put it back on with thermal paste/grease (not glue) or one of the better thermal compounds. In the case of #3, I had two computers shipped to our ship fed ex. Fed ex at least dropped them (not sure from what height but given that this is a steal enclosure bent 2 inches in -- I don't want to know). After reseating everything in a slot, both of them refused to post. But there were motherboard lights telling me that the reason was CPU related. Both had to be cleaned and reseated. One also had to have the graphics card replaced. I would have demanded fed ex insurance replace them, except they were needed in 3 days, insurance would take longer, so fixing was manditory.
