You're right about that! Though, I've seen MOBO's that have a small speaker embedded on the board itself.

interesting. I don't think I ever saw that one before. I'd think the 2 digit 7 segment display on some of my boards would be a more useful diagnostic tool and it's not really any bigger than the minispeaker.

I'm helping a mate out who has hit a bit of bad luck. He's unempoyed and recently was home invaded and as well as kicking a few teeth out they kicked crap out of his computer. Silly bastard went out a bought a few parts with a loan he got before I could have a look over his system. He needed a power supply, HDD and video card but I didn't know at that point if the computer (P4 2.66GHz) was in working order. I pulled out the air compressor and blew enough crap out of the heat sink to plant potatoes in. So it has a DVD-ROM, DVD-R, floppy, 1GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 256MD video, video capture, modem, fluro lights with power switch and I think a SPDIF thingy. It powers up nicely, all the lights on the motherboard light up abd all fans go, but no BIOS beeps or display. Probably means that the motherboard/CPU/RAM is gone. Anyone have any ideas of what else it could be? I have RAM I can swap out for testing but no CPU or M/B, any help appreciated.

Mainly drug addicts who break in if your home or not. Usually more than one and they are quite nasty if you are in their way.

              1. I don't suppose anyone by chance "tested" the power supply without a motherboard attached? depending on power supply, an unloaded test of a PC powersupply will render the power supply: non-functional. 2) blowing dirt out of the heatsink could mean an overheated CPU, or dead CPU 3) kicking a computer while it is up could have resulted in a brief gap between heatsink and CPU, an air-bubble between the two heats up fast and activates the auto-off on the chip to prevent overheating. Although this is a relatively new thing, I believe it came in the P4 line. Taking the heatsink off, cleaning it properly (google or ask if unsure), put it back on with thermal paste/grease (not glue) or one of the better thermal compounds. In the case of #3, I had two computers shipped to our ship fed ex. Fed ex at least dropped them (not sure from what height but given that this is a steal enclosure bent 2 inches in -- I don't want to know). After reseating everything in a slot, both of them refused to post. But there were motherboard lights telling me that the reason was CPU related. Both had to be cleaned and reseated. One also had to have the graphics card replaced. I would have demanded fed ex insurance replace them, except they were needed in 3 days, insurance would take longer, so fixing was manditory.

I don't feel unsafe in my home, but there is scum out there. I spent 18 months managing a pub in Fairfield were 2 of the biggest Ice and Cocaine dealers hung out. Amongst the locals were Assyrian gangs and Tongans and Somoans that would fit right alongside the biggest of the NFL players. I had to walk people out that were shooting up heroin, carrying guns and said Tongans and Somoans when they were too pissed to stay. It's not about being tough or too full of myself, but there are times when you just have stand up and stare down, shit happens, you aren't going to be able to stop these people from doing what they want to do. You just have to do your best to control what you can and ride out the rest.

Supermicro has a piezo speaker (mini) for the heat alarms and a slightly larger one for standard PC boot tones both on the motherboard, as well as a 3 LED error message system. handy.

No and neither is the carrying of guns, but that doesn't stop the criminal element from doing it.

First thing you do is disconnect everything that is not neccesary for the pc to run eg. Sound Card, Hard Drives, CD/DVD Roms, Floppy Drives. All you leave connected is your display adapter and 1 memory module (and the CPU obvliously). Now power up the PC If nothing happens, try it with the memory module in another slot. If still nothing happens, try another memory module, and also try it in multiple slots. If STILL nothing happens then you can try another CPU if you can find one, and if you suspect that your PC-Speaker isn't working you could even try another display adapter because it's possible that the PC is beeping but the speaker is not functioning. If all of the above fails, try another mother board. If you still struggle, try another PC. ;P

You should be able to eliminate RAM from the equation as the computer will at least make noise/beeps even if the RAM was bad. I'm not sure if the same can be said for the CPU.

The p3 line actually. The p4 improved response time to allow underclocking to FPS slideshow performance if all cooling was lost instead of doing an emergency shutdown that left the PC hung. I'm not sure when AMD got around to stealing the idea, I know the athlonXP family would smoke if the heatsink was removed during operation.

hmmmm... XEONs will still shut down, its most of our work on those processors, and I can't tell you how many times and overheated processor has shut down a system. They underclock to a limit then *poof* gone. At least until you fix the problem.
