Australian immigrant test

Australia has unveiled details of a new citizenship test for immigrants. They will be asked questions about history, institutions and culture - as well as committing to Australian social values focusing on "mateship".[^] I don't really see what the fuss is about. It isn't a test for allowing immigrants into the country, only if they want to become a citizen. I agree with the idea in principle. I think if they did one for the UK then they'd have to localise it to the area you are planning on settling in, or are currently living in in order to show they can integrate properly. For example, for the most of the UK the test would be required to be taken in English. In the Western Isles where the first language is Gaelic for over 75% of the population (over 90% on some islands) then they would take the test in Gaelic (the same in the pockets of Wales where Welsh is the predominant language). If the test is taken in Scotland questions on devolved issues of the Scottish Parliament would be needed. e.g. A question on education would be different in Scotland than England.

This is stupid. Most Aussies, myself included, couldnt answer the questions of the top of our heads. Given the questions dont change each time the 'test' is given I reakon there will be a cheat sheet available in your language of choice by the end of the week. Edit According to that article the questions do change, they take 20 from a pool of 200. The TV news last night claimed the opposite

I think that would be a wonderful idea, and we should immediately deport all Brits who fail the test without offering a resit. Seriously though, what a load of tosh. As mentioned most native Australians would fail the test, and once the 200 questions were known the answers would make the top result on Google within hours.

They already do a test like this in the UK: http://www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk/[^] and yes, most British people would fail it.

But, surely the next step is to make immigrants become citizens after a certain time ? I think it's stupid. The questions are stupid. I could pass it, but only because they only require 60%. And I'd like to think I know more history than most people.

They do this in the US, too. But as near as I can tell, it's become a joke. English proficiency is one part and I know citizens who can hardly speak it. Lack of English proficiency is widely used by new citizens to get out of jury duty. Yet their English doesn't prevent them from holding responsible jobs in Silicon Valley.
