How "Scaled" is your paycheck?

Oh, yes, I have spent ALOT of time on that site. However, I have found that my local pay ranges vary wildly from what they say should be the average. eg. 2005 - They said that the average pay for a .NET developer in Charlotte, NC was 35/hr and I was making $37. I felt pretty good. Then, quietly and against management's direction, a few of us consultants started talking and I found out that among the 5 of us, I was the LOWEST paid. There was one guy there making $46/hr!

I've yet to find one that gives a good indication of expected earnings based on role, industry, and years experience. Salary.com just gives an average of every reported salary in the sector, doesn't it? That's pretty worthless.
What I found was that they survey at least 1000 to 4000 people in your sector in the nation and use cost of living and other factors to come up with the numbers in your area. I believe this is flawed at best otherwise I am seriously under payed being that I am in the 25th percentile...

In your position (Employee or Consultant) and including your benefits package, are you making a fair salary or are you lower than the rest of the development community in your area? If you are a consultant, are you making what other consultants are making? If you're an employee, are you making the same salary WITH the same benefits that everyone else gets? What are the best geographical areas to work in for financial gains? I'm in Southern Florida, USA and right now, I am financially below the market.:( The benefits are typical without any outstanding perks.

Nobody gets paid what they are worth. If they did, their company would go out of business. Even people who are self employed have to be careful how they price themselves or they too will go out of business.
That's probably true. However, they could afford to pay the good developers better if they were able to get rid of the bad ones. Here, we have several developers who haven't written ANY code since they have been here and yet, they are still here. Heck, one even got promoted to a Sr. Programmer Analyst. I'd be happy to take a good salary and a respectable title, IF either one meant something. When you make the same and carry the same title as a developer who spends all day surfing, it sort of makes you feel less important to the company!

Why are we still calling it Common Sense when it's just not that common?I see it liek this. Less than 5 years programming experience, you have to suck it up. Over 5 years you should make between 60 - 120K depending where you live. If you want more then that, you'll have to start your own company or get into management. Sometimes you have to change jobs to get a good pay jump. Sad but true.

This is why I think it is retarded for things like pay to be taboo topics of discussion. Sometimes, you NEED to know if you are being short-changed. There are ALWAYS reasons for the disparity in pay, and most of them are well deserved. Experience, seniority, education, number of successful completed projects - and so forth, are all good reasons for someone else to make a whole lot more money than you for the same work. But when two people with approximately equal accomplishment and qualification are being paid WIDELY different amounts, there's something wrong, and they need to know it. Only, the whole "It's evil to talk about pay together!" stigma prevents them from ever finding out. Two guesses who decided it was bad to talk about pay levels. Here's a hint: who has the most to gain from people accepting lower pay than their work is worth?

Why are we still calling it Common Sense when it's just not that common?You need to find out what other companies are paying in your area. Check local job listings. Some people will go so far as to search for a new job with the hope of either getting a better salary or using it as a means to get a raise. You can also fish information from headhunters. They can give you a bit of salary info on recent canidates they've placed but you'll need to form a relationship with them first usually.
