I bet you someone snuck in one night, ran around with it like an idiot ("I've got the kilogram! I've got the kilogram! Waaa!) dropped it, picked it up, saw the scratches, used some 1000 grit sandpaper and some brasso to clean it up, and, after wiping off the fingerprints, snuck it back in its case. 50 micrograms easy.

I was thinking more along the lines of a global conspiracy...by companies that sell "by weight" products...or maybe even the Post Office...put a stamp on the envelope causes it to be bumped up to the next increment requiring another stamp...hmmmmmmmm :~ Steve

So - I can stick to the kilogram diet and lose weight this way.

Deja View - the feeling that you've seen this post before.

 no fair... I go to all that trouble to loose weight, and someone put the kilogram on a diet too. or maybe I shouldn't have tested that ray gun there last year.... hmmmmm....

"We don't really have a good hypothesis for it,'' Davis said in a phone interview Wednesday. I do - it was made on a Friday afternoon at about 10 to 5 and the craftsman in question thought "Bugger it, I'm off down the pub".

You know, it's as heavy as before, only larger in volume, i.e., less dense.

They say 50 Micrograms is the weight of a fingerprint. I suggest they give the kilogram a good wash as well as their measuring equipment.

or cause wary waistline-watchers to re-examine their weights: 50 micrograms is roughly equivalent to the weight of a fingerprint. New diet patent - eat sandwich with gloves on. Guaranteed minimum 500 microgram weight loss per day per sandwich (400 if you eat with pinkies raised.)

You've got it all wrong. It's not about weight loss, it's about slime! Sounds vaguely (perhaps blatantly) political.

Basing the standard kilogram on a physical object seems unreliable to me. Why not base it on something objective and timeless, like the mass of a specific number of atoms of a specific isotope of an element?

probably the difficulty of counting the number of atoms precisely enough in a usefully large sample. 1g of atomic Hydrogen contains ~6*10^23 atoms. All the other periodic redefines have been done when problems begin to surface with the old definition, until it breaks there's no point in spending money to fix it afterall. This issue probably will result in a new definition at some point in the medium near future.
