Windows Update is...

I suspected this for ages. They also won't give you anything if you haven't installed the thing that kills windows if it thinks it's copied.

I haven't felt 100% in control of any Microsoft OS since DOS and Windows 3.11. I remember installing Windows 95 for the first time. Spent about 30 minutes looking at all the new files / folders and thinking "Holy Shit!, I've lost control!"

Don't automatically download. That's like spreading your legs but not anticipating penetration.

I actually am. One year ago or so, I downloaded some upgrades from Windows Update. I don't know how or why, but it messed the entire system. I couldn't even reboot. I had to re-install my previous XPSP1. Since then I manually select which upgrade I'll allow, and which I won't. And I only allow it after reading in the KB. I don't want to lose my system again.

 I'm confused. The article claims that MS is actually pushing some updates on you without your consent. How does that "thrill" you?

Ummm... the article suggests that some updates are made with Automatic Updates completely disabled. In your analogy that's aggravated rape.
Yep.

Yep.
Can I least request that Windows use protection? :)

Well Windows is hardly alone in that dept - unix is no different, I've used it for years and have yet to understand the logic behind where most of the files are stored.

Agree 110%. I've been "experimenting" for years on and off with various flavors of Linux and I don't have a clue as where to find most files. Sad really. I'm old enough to think "Wow, I need to get with the times", yet young enough to think "This is ridiculous". It's not a good time to me 40 something and in to software. To top it all off, the wife's 4 year old Compaq notebook is toast and I'm seriously considering an Apple MacBook as a replacement. Talk about culture shock! :-D

I wonder. I have WU turned off completely. I justed checked the files mentioned in the article and they are all at 7.0.6000.374 NOT 7.0.6000.381 as the article suggests is happening. Not sure why this is though.

"Not too thrilled" = "a bit upset" = "not very happy" = "why the hell are they updating my computer without my permission when I have turned automatic updates off". Hope that clarifies it for you. -- modified at 0:14 Thursday 13th September, 2007 Just fixed up a missing t

MS first inspects your PC and only updates those it thinks are worthy of the update?

Keep an eye on the file versions. Could be the authors are complete morons and the article is total BS. As much as I like to bash MS - I try to be objective, still there are folks who will fabricate stuff.

The cat's arse. I don't know how a cat's arse ever got to represent that what is really good, but I love the saying anyway.
