Last weekend we got puppy for my daughter's birthday. It's boy and teddy bear breed[^] (cross between Shih Tzu & Bichon Fris) First night we couldn't sleep at all, as he was crying/barking all night in his crate. But I moved the crate to master bedroom and after that we were able to sleep partially for the last 2 nights. Right now we are having tough time in teaching this guy housebreaking (potty training) habits. BTW, his name is Teddy. :-D I appreciate any tips/suggestions in raising this cute dude.

Congrats. My wife and I have a Shih Tzu and the similarities between those pics and my little Ollie are striking. Only thing to remember, give them lots of affection. :)

Watch every episode of The dog whisperer[^] the man is a genius when it comes to dogs and is the only reason I've ever contemplated getting a dog. I thought all dogs were just a nuisance pain in the ass, now I've come to see that every dog's behaviour is entirely attributable to it's owner.

Balanced with discipline of course, dogs literally *need* discipline as much as they need affection.

Dogs love praise and admiration. They quickly learn the cause/effect game. If he does something you like, praise him immediately. If he does something you do not like, scold (i.e., not beat) him immediately. They have a very, very short memory, so if you don't actually catch the dog in the act, a scolding will do absolutely no good. For example, if he poops on the carpet, but you don't find him for 10 seconds and he's then waiting by the door, a scolding will cause him to think he's in trouble for waiting by the door. If he is out of his yard and you call him to come home, praise him right there for coming to you. If he ever gets scolded for coming to you, guess what he's not going to want to do in the future?

Ditto. We've got an American Staffordshire (aka Pitbull [collective oooh nooos!]) and we've learned a ton from that show.

get ready to have a bunch of your stuff chewed up. and for some great smells being added to your house. and the whining and the pee showing up on your sock as you tread in it. My daughter got one http://shazware.com/pic[^] Said she'd do EVERYTHING for it. You know what happened... Sigh... But you gotta admit it's cute. Make sure it's got something it's SUPPOSED to chew on (some dog toy thing). And keep an eye on it as far as rushing it outside to save your rug. Eventually it'll whine less at night. More during dinner time :( Maybe get a (big) pen for it. that you can cover with a black cloth or put in a room that's dark to help it go to sleep or somethin... Good luck to ya. sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ...SteveH

Man, I'm allergic to dogs, but am considering one of those.:laugh: This is not house breaking, but I remember watching some shows that tell you to lightly bang wood spoon on a frying pan around the dog. This will quickly get him use to sounds that may occur in the house, without getting scared. Good luck with the house breaking. You should blog about the experience. I would read it.

Someone I know went home a few days ago to discover a dog - not sure what sort (haven't seen it, heard second hand). Her partner was apparrently owed money and took the puppy as payment. So far, in it's first few days it has: Eaten some 6 ft window blinds Knocked a computer off a desk (destroyed) so it could look out of the window Knocked over the TV (destroyed) Eaten the pet rabbit (definitely destroyed) Good luck - I hope yours is nothing like this! Rich
