Stan Lippman / WPF & C++/CLI

Does anyone know the reason behind Stan Lippman leaving Microsoft???? - The last i heard he was bringing C++/CLI to the masses. I wonder if his departure has anything to do with the fact that Microsoft is not supporting WPF using C++/CLI. Does anyone have any gossip on this? Also what are peoples views on C++/CLI not supporting WPF?? I personally think that its another bad blow for the C++ community. What are other peoples thoughts on this?

I don't care at all! Not even the one programmer who is passionate about C++/CLI will care to write WPF applications in C++/CLI. C++/CLI is meant to be a thunk language. Developing anything major in it is a big pain. I am talking from the perspective of someone who has managed to release a major app which uses .NET/MFC/COM/(C++/CLI) and now I am also going to integrate WPF in the application. I don't need any kind of support in C++/CLI for WPF.

C++/CLI was itself a bad blow to the community. The justification that C++ users will not have to learn new language like C# if C++/CLI was offered was a stupid one. C++/CLI is so not C++. In fact I think C# is closer to C++ than C++/CLI.

well Stan did get lit up last night and told me everything. However, I also was lit up last night and forgot it all

From what I have read lately on MSDN, I believe Microsoft throwing more resources toward the "native" C++ features at the expense of C++/CLI development. I have only used C++/CLI to employ some old but useful (and not supported) libraries. It would be nice to have explicitly the same C# support for C++/CLI; however, I can live with being bilingual.

C++ is wholely and completely irrelevant in the 21st century. The less resources MS spends on it the better. (You did ask for my opinion :) )

I'm not sure I understand. Isn't WPF just a bunch of managed classes? And C++/CLI can make use of managed classes quite well. So I'm envisaging it would be quite easy to chuck in some Viewports, Canvases and rectangles, and bob is the proverbial uncle!

Not even if you were paid..... ONE MEEELION DOLLARS and hard sharks with fikker "laser" beams on their heads? I have been doing TCL and C# for the last few months (An odd mix, but writing TCL extensions in C# is extremely fun and rewarding), and I had to go back to some C++ for a few days. It felt old and icky, but when I got back into some templating action, I felt alive again, like I was absailing down a 900m drop with no harness :)

Exactly! I've had to go back from time to time to futz around with some old c++ code and old and icky is an absolutely perfect way to describe it. When I look at all the lines of necessary code that essentially do nothing relevant or visible to the end user of the software I shudder in revulsion.
