I always wonder why they called it "plug and play". If you really want to be accurate it should be "plug, install drivers, then unplug and plug again, then reboot, then open device manager and fiddle around, then reboot again, reinstall drivers and finally play"

That's actually the long name. But for marketing purposes it was a little too long, so they decided to abbreviate it, stripping a word here and there. These marketing guys... :)

Because of its sexual connotations. Nothing succeeds better marketing wise than something with sexual connotations. Or, if you don't like that rationale, because it appeals to our sense of immediate gratification and our modern requirement for things to happen instantly. And finally, that nothing can be actually called "work" anymore. Because of course, nothing of value is done for the sake of the value of it anymore. It all has to be "fun" or "play". Marc

What? Your god is giving you sexual jokes? It makes a change to having Moses talking to a burning bush I suppose; damn - all we got were commandments and not innuendo.

If I had a dime for every sexual innuendo involved in the computer industry, I would be rich. Honestly, it is there, everywhere you look. Mostly because computer geeks notoriously got very "little" action, so they settled for embedding sexual innuendo. Do you really want an honest and complete assessment for what USB plug-n-play really is? and what it means?

Because we like 3 letter-wide stuff, regardless of senses. Plug and Play gives you "PnP", which is cool. where else, according to your version, "plug, install drivers, then unplug and plug again, then reboot, then open device manager and fiddle around, then reboot again, reinstall drivers and finally play" gives you "Pittttr", which is not only non-cool, but also hard to pronounce.

Hence why we have floppy and hard disks, motherboards, male and female adapters. It's not just the computer industry - it's wherever you have a bunch of undersexed overhormoned males. It always reminds me of the refute to the men can't multitask argument - "I can multitask, I can fantasise about a beautiful woman and not drool - both at the same time."

It's all relative. Sure, it ain't nearly as easy as what it purports to be, especially the cheap stuff. But... it's been almost a decade since i last had to worry about IRQs, or choose between a working sound card and a CPU-intensive parallel port driver. So by comparison, it's almost fun...

Did I say something funny? I was being dead serious. If you disagree, well, that's fantastic. You're the model Waldorf[^] parent then, as you obviously haven't been exposed to any form of advertisement what-so-ever! And even more importantly, your soul hasn't been influenced by Ahrimanic[^] forces and you should find your period of kamaloka[^] significantly reduced and your journey to the Sun being much easier.
