Why is it called plug and play??

I always wonder why they called it "plug and play". If you really want to be accurate it should be "plug, install drivers, then unplug and plug again, then reboot, then open device manager and fiddle around, then reboot again, reinstall drivers and finally play"
it's a variation of the RS232 serial ports, male and female, you were always bending a male pin and couldn't play. usb no bent pins, all play! ;P

Because of its sexual connotations. Nothing succeeds better marketing wise than something with sexual connotations. Or, if you don't like that rationale, because it appeals to our sense of immediate gratification and our modern requirement for things to happen instantly. Plug and Play gives you "PnP", which is cool. where else, according to your version, "plug, install drivers, then unplug and plug again, then reboot, then open device manager and fiddle around, then reboot again, reinstall drivers and finally play" gives you "Pittttr", which is not only non-cool, but also hard to pronounce.

It's all relative. Sure, it ain't nearly as easy as what it purports to be, especially the cheap stuff. But... it's been almost a decade since i last had to worry about IRQs, or choose between a working sound card and a CPU-intensive parallel port driver. So by comparison, it's almost fun... :rolleyes:
