Hey guys, My weekend was spoiled by a virus "thanks to my little brother's pen drive:(" Anyways, I had to install my Norton 2005 and update the virus definition list to date and perform a full scan but Norton really disappointed me when I had to install KasperSky Antivirus that caught 15 more viruses that Norton couldnt detect with its last updates:( Anyhow, I think I'm clean now "hopefully", however I think I have some damage left and I'd be thankful if you can help.. - Whenever I have to open a drive I get the open with list of applications and if I want it to just open, I have to browse for explorer.exe each time I double click on a drive from my computer, alternatively, I would type my drive letter followed by a colon in run. - I cant set the "Show hidden files and folders" and "Hide operation system files" options in folder options, "every time I change these options, they just set back automatically to dont show:(" Would it be helpful if I replaced the explorer/kernel files with a copy from a well functioning windows?? And if yes, can you please email those files to me on[

Do you have avpo or NTDE1ECT.COM on the registry and startup items and on the System32?

If you think these files are corrupted, your best bet would be to do either an in-place reinstall of Windows or use the repair console to get the files off your Windows disk. support.microsoft.com will have details on how to do this.

To be honest, your best bet is probably to backup all your data, reformat and install windows from scratch.

I rather would'nt recommend it when comp is infected with virus.Though little painful attempt, but a better workaround will be to reformat and install the OS from scratch.

Hook up the infected drive as slave with a working installation as master. This way you don't run the risk of infecting your backup media with whatever is left over. Roswell

I guess you can't use System Restore to go back to an earlier time?...even if you didn't manually make any backups, XP makes them...just pick an earlier date on the calendar before your troubles? Start-->Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Restore...be warned though, you might have backed up the virus as well...go wayyy back. I use Avira Anti-Vir Personal Classic for anti-virus...it catches a great deal of stuff and it's free for home use...www.avira.com. Don't use the more commercial anti-virus...they spend all their money on advertising and none on improving their products.

Survival of the bully, starving all competing viruses. Then, simply uninstall Norton. At least, that's the theory.
